In chatting with friends in a group chat offline, I came to the terrifying conclusion/understanding that Chris Kreider is undeniably the Rangers' best first-round pick in the last 30 years. Yup. You read that right. Thirty. Years.
In fact, in order to find a genuine star-level player they took, you have to go back as far as either 1991 (Kovalev) or 1986 (Leetch).
Don't believe me? History proves otherwise:
2020: Alexis Lafreniere (1)
2019: Kaapo Kakko (2)
2018: Vitali Kravtsov (9), K'Andre Miller (22), Nils Lundkvist (28)
2017: Lias Andersson (7), Filip Chytil (21)
2016: N/A — Red Wings selected Dennis Cholowski with NYR pick (20)
2015: N/A — Islanders selected Anthony Beauvillier with NYR pick (28)
2014: N/A — Islanders selected Josh Ho-Sang with the NYR pick (28)
2013: N/A — Blue Jackets selected Kerby Rychel with the NYR pick (19)
2012: Brady Skjei (28)
2011: J.T. Miller (15)
2010: Dylan McIlrath (10)
2009: Chris Kreider (19)
2008: Michael Del Zotto (20)
2007: Alexei Cherepanov (17)
2006: Bobby Sanguinetti (21)
2005: Marc Staal (12)
2004: Al Montoya (6)
2003: Hugh Jessiman (12)
2002: N/A — Flames selected Eric Nystrom with the NYR pick (10)
2001: Dan Blackburn (10)
2000: N/A — Lightning selected Nikita Alexeev with the NYR pick (8)
1999: Pavel Brendl (4)
1998: Manny Malhotra (7)
1997: Stefan Cherneski (19)
1996: Jeff Brown (22)
1995: N/A — Whalers selected JS Giguere with the NYR pick (15)
1994: Dan Cloutier (26)
1993: Niklas Sundstrom (8)
Before that?
1992: Peter Ferraro (24)
1991: Alex Kovalev (15)
1990: Michael Stewart (13)
1989: Steven Rice (20)
1988: N/A — Troy Mallette was taken 22nd overall in the second round
1987: Jayson More (10)
Happy Thursday, everyone!

Since Amonte would have gone to the Nords, whom would the Rangers have traded to get Matteau and Noonan?
Great question! Allow me to recant

Lindros was a wreckingball. Too bad nobody taught him how to skate with his head up.
When your that big, does it really matter? You're usually going thru/over opponents anyway

I'm inclined to say probably. Thinking about it now; if the roster was mostly the same, imagine the E-train centering Graves and Matteau, or insert Noonan in there

When I still live in California, we had the Stockon Thunder; who've since moved, which brought the Stockton Heat; Calgary's farm team.
Wasn't a huge fan of the ECHL; entertaining, just not the best hockey on the planet. I think I'd rather watch a NCAA game than an ECHL...
Having escaped California to Ohios warm embrace, I thought it was a little ironic the cyclones became an NYR affiliate. Maybe it's sign!
Just for clarification, I'm originally from Upstate NY; Sabre country

What do y'all think about the NYR's new minor affiliate; Cinci cyclones? Ironically enough we just moved to the cinci area back in December

Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but Mollie Walker reported the Rangers have no interest in Roy and he isn't going to be interviewed for the position.

Def enjoy the faster game. Talent is at an all time high.
Get rid of these NMC's; dumbest contract stipulation.
I want more meaningful games.
Cut season down to 72 games, playoff format should seed 1-8 in both conferences. Best of 5 up until the Conference and Stanley Cup Finals. Drop the shootout but keep the 5 minute 3 on 3. Let it end in a tie after some fun run and gun.
I want better rivalries back.
Keep fighting in the game.
Make All-Star weekend a mini world tournament instead of the circus it has become.
Not a bad idea; however, I wouldn't be apposed to a 5 minute OT, then a 3 round shootout, and if still no score, award the tie.

Seriously, I would like to see them do away with regular season OT. Fuck the "loser point", and keep games 60 minutes long.
I could give a shit about the shootout too. I think it sucks. Like @Valriera said, the season is really long, and making games longer with OT and shootouts doesn't help...even being 5 minutes.
2 points for a win
1 point apiece for a tie
Save OT for the playoffs where it's something special!
I hated ties and was so pleased to hear they adjusted the format to a shootout way jack then. It didn't take long for me to miss ties tho. But ya, like you I loathe the reg season ot format

This is more of a bitch session on my part, but i wanted some opinions on how y'all feel about NHL and the direction it's going. For me, i find the irritation and lack of enthusiasm growing with each passing season; maybe because our lack of championship... My major points of contention are as follows:
TV and radio broadcasts: good lord, can they assemble a larger group of pretentious annoying booty clowns????? I could spend a day describing what irks me! I mean there were 2 clowns on NHL Radio talking about Jack Eichel, and one of them referred to him as"The Eichel Tower" which in and of itself was fine, but this led to the other meat head interrupting him to exclaim in most childish manner, how he and others call him "Jackie Aces". Trust me when i say this, the cringe-o-meter broke! Don't get me wrong there are a few out there i enjoy listening to
Expansion and Salary cap: both of which have lead to severe deluted talent IMO. There should be no reason the Vegas Golden Showers are about to win their 2nd Conference title and make their 2nd SC Finals appearance in what; 4 years? Yeah, ill concede I'm envious, i mean frick, 1 cup n almost 30 years for us! Yet, here comes these turds and hey look, a SC appearance in their inaugural season.
Hope everyone is doing well

I'm baffled Dolan didn't do something! In 1999/2000 regular season he canned Neil Smith and John Schmuckler for those games horrible games vs Detroit; then fast forward to another regular season match vs the Caps, he cans Davidson and Gorton. Here we have 2 playoff matches the Rangers basically dont show up for, and alls quie on the western front! Go figure

At least Kane can probably be brought back for cheaper. If he even wants to come back here.
I get the sneaky suspicion he and/or Terestinko will be Devils next year
