What was a great day, is disrupted with terrible sports news from Europe. As some of you know, I am huge fan of professional cycling because it involves heroism, risks, adventure, the most beautiful places in the world and... well, I just love it. Today, 26-year old Wouter Weylandt, one of my favorite Belgian riders and a beloved athlete in the pack, crashed heavily during a 50 MPH downhill section in the Italian Alps. He had severe head injury, despite wearing a helmet, and died shortly after in a hospital nearby.
This is a tragedy. For his family, as he was about to become a father for the first time, for his fans and for the sport. THIS IS CYCLING, and despite the doping, the issues, and the dangers. We are fans and lovers of the sport through and through.
RIP Wouter. You will be missed.
