Kotkaniemi has a career-best like 38 points or something. He's getting $6.1 million when he is probably, at best, a $4 million player? The key here is it being a single year, with the expectation among experts and fans that he'll just sign an extension for much less ($4–5 million per) shortly after January, but you'd basically need to target a lot of players just like this every year. I get the sense the league would close that loophole pretty quickly, because this would undoubtedly get exploited by big market teams who can afford to offer stupid money knowing it's a one-year thing.
