2023-24 ECSF #5: Rangers vs. Carolina Hurricanes — Hurrican't

Recommended Posts

Obviously it was bad, but I'm going to chalk it up to just having a really bad game. Yeah, not a good time, but if it was going to happen, I'm glad it was last night instead of a game seven or something. Probably their first really bad game in a month or so. Game four they weren't that great, but they were the better team after the first period and almost came back. Last night was a huge dud, and on home ice, looks even worse.

Not to really blame the refs since the Rangers played like shit, BUT how does Burns break his stick on a crosscheck on Mika and not get called, then a few seconds later apparently Carolina had too many men on the ice for 10 seconds (according to Ferraro), both during a Rangers PP.  If Carolina had too many men for 2 seconds I can understand it letting it go, but for 10 during a PK?

Either way the Rangers played like shit but this is the type of shit that gets frustrating.

The refs sucked.. But going full turtle like you were up 6-0 going in to the 3rd remains mind-numbingly stupid approach.  The players played like top shelf turds, but the staff face planted as bad if not worse.. They all shit in this bed, now they get to sleep in it for an extra night,

Slept on it…. Yup.. Still fucking livid

Anger, disbelief, disappointment, disgust...yup, Rangers fans are probably going through the full range of motions this morning.

Can only hope the team understands the gravity of the situation they've put themselves in, puts that stinker in the rearview mirror and comes out a transformed team on Thursday that's playing to win, rather than one not trying to lose.

To be fair to Lavi, the Rangers were getting absolutely obliterated at 5v5 last night. They couldn’t just change how the game was going because the Canes dictated what was happening and imposed their will. I don’t think it was Lavi’s gameplan to turtle and let the Canes live in the Rangers’ end of the rink for the entire 3rd period on a 1 goal lead. Even if it was the gameplan, it’s really because he had no other option except to put it on Shesterkin’s shoulders to provide the shutout.

This is why 5v5 performance matters. The Rangers kept up enough to keep it relatively even through the first few games, where Igor and special teams production could be the difference. PP production has gone away and the 5v5 disparity has grown increasingly more tilted in favor of the Canes. First period G4 was pure domination. The entire game G5 was pure domination. It was a matter of time for the shots to start going in.

Woof. Christ. Dogs in this one. Got exactly what they deserved and asked for.

For comparison, NST:

5v5, 13-5 HDC, 2.11-1.72 xG, both in favor of Canes

AllStrengths, 13-9 HDC, 3.23-2.8 xG, both in favor of the Canes
