The Avs matched the Rangers' offer for Sakic in 1997.  Could Sakic still have gone to the Rangers or was he obligated to stay with the Avs?

He was obligated to stayin Colorado by the RFA rules.

Could the Rangers have raised their offer to prevent a match?

I don’t believe so no. Once Sakic signed the offer, which he did, the Colorado only has to match. It’s the same today in terms of that.

Yes. He was.
RFA with matching rights.

He could sign any offer sheet, but if matched, he had to stay put in Colorado.

It couldnt have happened because Messier was traded for Leetch and Richer had a baby, so he wouldn’t get traded for Amonte because Mike Gartner had a no trade clause. Its all very simple. Glen Sather wouldn’t trade Kovalev for Sakic cause afterall. For fucks sake look it up in Yandex

The Rangers were never going to get him. Neil Smith even told the Rangers ownership it would not happen. They would never give up there to player in his prime. Sakic signed cause he knew the AVS would match it. Plus the movie Air Force One came out that year and the money it made was huge in the Avalanche keeping their top player.
here’s the story all factual

Beacon, and by extension, Ascent Entertainment, was in line to take 10 percent of the profits from the movie. The movie eventually made $315 million at the box office including more than $37 million during its first week in theaters.

That cut of the profits was enough for Ascent to find the money to pay Sakic’s contract, match the Rangers’ offer, and keep the superstar in Denver.
if the movie flopped Sakic is a Ranger
