Shame.  Verbeek and Messier complemented each other very well.

Yeah.

But that was nearly a 100% pay increase for Verbeek and as said, he was already 32 with a lot of miles and the Rangers were already paying out on some very big salaries and just couldn’t or wouldn’t go that high.

They did try to keep him at a lower number, I think in the mid to high $2 millions,  but they just couldn’t give him what Dallas did, and that was really when salaries in hockey started to get a lot bigger and Verbeek knew at his age that it was probably his one shot at a big payday and he had to take it. Plus Dallas was really making a big effort to improve, spending money, and bringing in talent. And a year after they signed Verbeek, they signed Belfour, which is what really made them a true contender.

Plus, they also signed David Reid, Brett Hull, and Shawn Chambers.  Plus the trade for Keane and Skrudland helped.

The big ones for them were actually trading for Nieuwendyk, trading for Zubov, and signing Belfour.

They also added Carboneau and the very overlooked and underrated Darryl Sydor in that time as well.

They got good in a big damn hurry.
They kicked Bob Gainey upstairs to full-time GM and gave the reigns to Ken Hitchcock. Made the trades for Nieuwendyk and Zubov.

Brought up guys like Lehtinen and Langenbrunner, and as you said, signed and traded for a lot of quality vets, and got very good. Then Belfour really put them over the top.

That trade tree also leads to Jagr.

Todd Harvey came back in that deal, Rangers traded Harvey in a deal that netted Radek Dvorak who was part of the deal for Anson Carter who as we know was flipped for Jagr.

Yes it did.

I was so glad they got him for those two, and Harvey actually would’ve been a nice depth piece a few years later.

Gainey did an excellent job as their GM, assembling that team, as well as bringing Hitch along through the minors in their organization after he’d been with the Flyers.
Getting him out from behind the bench actually made the difference.

And he made MANY trades and signings that worked out.

He drafted ok too.
