Phil
Quote Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel underwent right ankle surgery on Wednesday, the team announced Friday. Here’s what you need to know: Guentzel, who was playing in summer league games as recently as Tuesday, will be re-evaluated in 12 weeks. The 2023-24 NHL season opens on Oct. 10. Quote Pittsburgh president of hockey operations and general manager Kyle Dubas said that as Guentzel “continued to increase the intensity of his preparation for the upcoming season, it was apparent that his ankle injury was not resolving in a way that was satisfactory to he or the Penguins.” Dubas added: “In collaboration with Jake — his representative Ben Hankinson of Octagon Sports, the Penguins medical team led by Dr. Dharmesh Vyas of UPMC Sports Medicine, and Dr. Coetzee — it was decided that surgery would be the best way to ensure Jake would be at his best in 2023-2024.” https://theathletic.com/4749029/2023/08/04/penguins-jake-guentzel-ankle-surgery/

RichieNextel305
Bad break for a team that I expect to hover around the wild card spots. For a team that badly needs to get off to a good start just for their own confidence, this is not the news you want to hear.
Phil
Between this, the retirement of Bergeron, and the pending retirement of Krejci, Ottawa and Buffalo are salivating right now.

Buffalo might end up with Kane half way through the season. Wild card could come down to 2 out of the 3 of Buffalo, Ottawa & NYI.

Aug 4 - Nov 10 = 14 weeks And if he is closer to the 12-14 week timeline, he will only miss 3 Eastern Conference games (Caps, Wings, Sens)...Penguins are loaded with Western Conference games until November 11. Points are points, though — doesn't matter who you bank them against. But yeah, I guess it's not as dire as you'd think, but it also assumes he comes back 100% and picks up right where he left off. Yeah but easier pill to swallow if they lose games vs. Dal, Col..Even w/o Guentzel the first month of the season they play some of the shittiest teams in the league, Chi, Ana (2x), Calgary, so I wouldnt count them out even w/ Guentzel out. Some truck driver from Estonia who just started playing hockey five years ago will score 30 on Crosby's wing. 1
