And there it is, but the damage is already done. Unless Huberdeau pulls a complete 180, there’s only one way to fix that franchise now: time. They have to wait for that 8 year, Panarin/Karlsson sized contract for a 60 point player to expire. Horrific. It’s the worst positioned franchise in the league right now, with next to no ability to maneuever. What a tough gig for Maloney to take on. Very likely to be fired before he has the required flexibility to fix it.

I think Huberdeau is the biggest bounce back candidate next year with a new coach and different team philosophy. There's no way the player who was one of the top producing wingers in the NHL the four years prior just becomes a 60 point guy. He's fourth in points from 2018-19 through 2021-22, behind only McDavid, Draisaitl, and Kane. That's not luck.

I do think the Flames are a huge bounce back candidate next season with a better coach and system to match the players. As mentioned with Huberdeau above, plus other key guys took steps back last year. Markstrom, Mangiapanne, and Lindholm also had down years. If the scorers pick it back up and Markstrom can settle somewhere in the middle around .910, that's a playoff team in a weak West.
