Team with notoriously bad goaltending takes free gamble on notoriously bad (cup winning) goaltender

Pretty much this, yup. No idea why they went for this with competent starters still available. This feels like the trade you make it you strike out on everything else.

So if Jack Campbell signs a deal for a $4.5mil or $5mil AAV, does Toronto burn down Wednesday or Thursday?

I think the issue was term. Campbell is looking for term - rumor is he's going to get 5x5 in Edmonton. Murray has 2 years left. Not coincidentally, that's when Matthews's and Nylander's contracts expire. This gives them maximum flexibility in 2 years when their franchise future will be up in the air.

That's the only logical reason this would be a semi-decent move. It can be made better if they can find a tandem goalie for a reasonable price too. If it's Murray-Kallgren next season, with Murray expected to play 55-ish games, then that's just foolish thinking.

Yes, but the problem is, that flexibility hinges on winning during the next two seasons, which, with Matt Murray as your starter seems, not great?

I don't think they necessarily have to win in the next two seasons. They just need Matthews to want to come back LOL. And being able to offer him $15M will help.

Sure. Being able to offer him a legitimate starting goaltender would, too.
