BrooksBurner Posted July 2, 2021 Posted July 2, 2021 https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/31752499/minnesota-wild-sign-joel-eriksson-ek-8-year-42-million-contract The Minnesota Wild signed forward Joel Eriksson Ek to a $42 million, eight-year contract Friday that carries an annual salary cap hit of $5.25 million. Eriksson Ek had a career-high 30 points on 19 goals and 11 assists in 56 games last season. The 24-year-old Swede led the Wild in faceoff wins and was fourth in voting for the Selke Trophy as the NHL's best defensive forward. Another long term, lowish AAV kind of deal. Is this going to be a trend this summer?
Phil Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Seems like it. That's two guys who have gotten their term at a lower AAV rather than signing short-term deals in the hopes of bigger paydays years from now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Valriera Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 If this is going to be a trend this summer (not sure why Erickson ek would do it, tbh, got a long career ahead) we should be ready to buy the dip while we can. That means get as much extension business done now as you can. The thing about these deals are they are so much more tradeable. Erickson Ek at 5.25 is going to be a fine player on any team at any point of that deal. 6? Not so much
Phil Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Players going for stability. That's what it feels like, yup. It's not a bad gamble, either. What if the cap only barely goes up coming out of the series of flat cap years? Gonna be even harder to convince teams to give you the bag now that you're two, three years older than you were when you should have signed long-term.
