Keirik Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 salary cap schmalary cap. Hope he signs a nice 7m per deal for the next 5 years. Just roll 2 lines and 2 d pairs all season.
BrooksBurner Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 Okay. How the hell would that work? 6M cap space. Figure Nylander and Johnsson out (10.4M). Pietrangelo in (~9M?). Fill the gaps with the ~7.5M cap space they have left. While Pietrangelo is exactly what the Leafs need, he turns 31 in January. Giving him a 7 year contract will most likely hamstring that team in a few years. Hard to see Pietrangelo not getting a 7 year offer from somewhere. Risky move. They would be able to recoup some good cheap ELCs and draft picks for Nylander/Johnsson.

Okay so instead of 4 forwards, they'll have 3 forwards and a defenseman. IMO that's still spreading the wealth way too thin.

I'd probably agree with you, but I'd rather have the 3 forwards and the defenseman if they are choosing between the two routes. The safest and smartest measure is probably just to trade Nylander for a good, younger, cost-controlled defenseman.

josh Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 Trade his rights. They won’t get as much due to removing conditional picks, but they could probably get a 3rd round pick. Or pursue sign and trade.

Or pursue sign and trade. They absolutely should. And there are plenty of teams that would want both the option of an 8th year (yup, seriously) and the extra negotiating window for that price.
Pete Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 He'll be 31 when they're playing again... They absolutely should. ThirtyONE Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 Kypreos had an interesting podcast on the leafs. He made it seem like the only way to get Pietrangelo in would be Nylander out.
Phil Posted September 19, 2020 Author Posted September 19, 2020 It's certainly the most practical path. Sent from my iPhone using Blueshirts Brotherhood mobile app powered by Tapatalk
