Scott
hmmmm Buffalo wasn't on Staal's 10 team no trade? Welcome to hockeys equivalent to purgatory.
Phil
MarJo: 1 year left, $4.5 million cap hit, $4 million salary EStaal: 1 year left, $3.25 million cap hit, $3 million salary So, Sabres save a million and gain in cap room, likely trying to hit an internal cap. Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa - locks 7. Anaheim, Florida, Phoenix, Detroit Possibly NJ, Islanders. At least he has a role and some good young teammates there. Also, I wonder if he submitted a new list or if this is from the trade deadline. Edit - nope. He submitted a new list yesterday. Sabre’s not on it per Michael Russo
Phil
That’ll keep Eichel happy ! I mean, it actually might. Staal's pretty good. He's old, but he's a really good 2C still. Way better than Johanssen, who has pretty much been a LW his whole career but was moved to C this year (and stunk).
ThirtyONE
Buffalo is looking to shake things up. Staal has been a leader everywhere he's been and he still has some gas left in the tank apparently. Not a major move but a good one for Buffalo. Aren't they looking for centers and to remove cap?
Phil
Yeah, I don't get it at all. First Bjugstad, now Johansson. It's like they're trying to find overpaid, ineffective players. He had an awesome year 3 years ago but has started to show some signs of age. He’s better than what they had but I wouldn’t think he’s going to make a huge impact at 35+. We shall see I guess. At least he will bring leadership.
Phil
But for Buffalo, that's all they need. He's a good 2C to backup Eichel. Sent from my iPhone using Blueshirts Brotherhood mobile app powered by Tapatalk
Sod16
Buffalo is getting a better player. I guess from Minnesota's standpoint, they are getting a guy five years younger, albeit with only one year on his contract. If Johansson turns out to have a good year with MN, he'll probably re-sign there, and they might get several decent years out of him, whereas with Staal, there really wasn't a possibility of anything past this coming season. In any event, I'd take what Buffalo got here.
