They've been ~top-5 in total hits all year and are currently 5th.

 

But there's absolutely no correlation between hits and winning. Columbus, San Jose, Nashville, Toronto, and Calgary are all ranked 24th or worse.

It seemed to make a difference for the Caps in the finals. Tampa looked to be playing cautiously and it threw off their game. It is not necessarily the number of hits but the caliber and timing that can make a difference.
