Blue Heaven Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 http://nypost.com/2017/06/19/islanders-owners-looking-to-sell-15-stake-cant-find-any-takers/ The owners of the New York Islanders have been trying to sell a minority stake in the NHL club for months — but have not had any luck, The Post has learned. LOL! Just move the team to Quebec already. They should have been in Kansas City when the Sprint Center opened in 2007.
Vodka Drunkenski Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 How much do you guys have saved up? #MakeBSBHGreatAgain
Bugg Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 Hard to see who is going to kick in $500 million + for a new arena at Belmont. And really how would Belmont be better with no real public transportation as opposed to Brooklyn with the LIRR and every subway stopping there. There is nothing at Belmont while Brooklyn has bars and restaurants galore. In fact since it opened despite the shittiness of the Nets and Isles it's been among the top-grossing arenas in the world. They have made a mess in Brooklyn instead of embracing it, because they and their fan base are whiny children. If they had any brains, simply go back to the Coliseum and host 14,000 a night and be done with it.
Phil Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 God just fucking move them. East Coast Yotes. I don't think their situation is even half as bad as the Coyotes has been, but the analogy is probably valid, if only tangentially.
Future Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 I don't think their situation is even half as bad as the Coyotes has been, but the analogy is probably valid, if only tangentially. Attendance is terrible, constant questions about where they're going to play, shitty team on the ice, and ownership questions. The only difference is that the league hasn't had to step in yet. This bum ass franchise hasn't been relevant since I was born. 10 playoff appearances in 28 years. The Coyotes have 8 appearances in just 20 seasons.

The Coyotes have 8 appearances in just 20 seasons. Thing that makes me nuts; if any of these teams aren't making money, either move or fold. Nobody has folded since the Cleveland Barons 3 decades ago.Leads me to believe while these clubs may lose money on paper with depreciation and other paper expenses, an NHL team is a good cash cow. Basically Bettman and his beloved "cost certainty" cap BS are holding back the big boys from spending to keep the Coyotes in Arizona. That makes no sense. You have Quebec and Seattle and perhaps Kansas City ready, willing an able to have franchises tomorrow. We lost a whole season basically to keep the little fish in business. That makes no sense. Islanders situation is really idiotic. While the Barclays configuration is awful, the arena and the area are really nice. If you live in LI and want to see a game, you could drive to a LIRR station and be there or back in under an hour. If they made a point of embracing their NYC community they could add a lot of very wealthy fans who live relatively close to Barclays. Instead they bitch like little girls. As to practicing away from the arena, the Devils may practice next store to their arena, but everyone else in the northeast is HQed at a suburban rink and commute to the downtown arena for games. Further there are 2 rinks in Brooklyn (Aviator and Abe Stark) that would probably welcome them. And if not, really, just go back to Uniondale and STFU. Oh, there aren't enough luxury boxes; sell some tickets before you worry about that. From the outside anyway the new Coliseum looks nice. Simply the economics of a Belmont arena are really weak. Nobody, especially not the state or county, are giving them any $. And hard to see how another concert/event venue without any public transportation competes with all the new ones around that do.

So, if they can't get one built closer to the base, that doesn't have the absurd sightlines and seating problems that Barclays does, they'll stick around and probably rebound. Bugg Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 What base? They didn't sell tickets in the Coliseum, they aren't selling them in Brooklyn. Where else is there to go? The Isles continue in this fantasy that whether they are at Belmont or the Coliseum a shitload of luxury box season subscribers living and working in LI are waiting to buy in.That's way more likely to happen in Brooklyn than LI. Barclays is actually closer to lower Manhattan and Wall Street than MSG, and Park Slope and the surrounding brownstone parts of Brooklyn are filled with wealthy people with disposable income. They have chosen to ignore that market and even badmouth it. Instead they want to appeal to a bunch of LI people who don't have that kind of scratch and who didn't buy in even in the cheap seats when they were in Uniondale. But they've been running this franchise into the ground for 3 decades, why stop now.
Phil Posted June 22, 2017 Posted June 22, 2017 What base? They didn't sell tickets in the Coliseum, they aren't selling them in Brooklyn. Where else is there to go? The base that exists, small(er) as it may be. If we're comparing Brooklyn to Nassau, Nassau saw better numbers.
