Yes, but never by plane. I needed a passport 14 years ago the last time I flew to California, but I wasn't sure if that was because I was a minor or not.

I think your parents were just being safe. I traveled alone around that age few times and I think all I had was a library card or a copy of my birth certificate. lol Something with my name and birthday on it.

That was b/c you didnt have any other photo i.d. other than your passport, that was your photo i.d. for being a minor

All you need is a birth certificate to fly as a minor within the U.S. however I think a lot of parents dont want to give there kid a birth certificate if they are flying alone b/c the risk of losing it.
