No that tournament isn't going anywhere. It is an IIHF tournament held every year. Its basically the men's version of the World Junior Championships. Has no bearing on the NHL nor the IOC.

You never get all the best players going to the IIHF World Championships though. Whether it's guys still playing in the playoffs, guys not wanting to play right after a long grueling season, or guys just not caring about this tournament. Its never best on best the way the Olympics and World Cup is/was. (Obviously the 2016 World Cup was an oddball with the Europe and North American teams)
