Hank mentioned it, but there's a strange movement in goaltending coaching that wants goalies to hold their glove like a catcher in baseball - palm facing forward, webbing vertical. This is fine for baseball when the object you're catching is being thrown from 60ft away but on defections and low shots, this creates a slow glove. This is exactly where Miller beat him last night.

It's not really a strange movement at all and it's perfectly logical to hold the glove fingers up with the T of the glove point upward in the majority of situations.

The puck is almost always coming from the ice upward to the glove and it's more natural to catch from that position compared to the older style goalies who had their gloves more down and to the side because you'd have to windmill your arm to catch the puck which would more often than not allow the puck to go past you when you were moving.

When you have to be in perfect position and play the percentages, it's better to have your hands up like most goalies do now since you're in a better middle position.

All joking aside, doesn’t it seem like just yesterday that this was just the beginning? It’s wild how time flies. I remember the birth of Henrik chant vs. Atlanta on a Saturday night (at first, it was “Lundqvist!”) and I remember that first month as a whole so vividly. It legitimately got to the point where you knew you were winning if he was in net; it was just a matter of if he’d get a shutout.

Then you blink your eyes, and all this time goes by. We were all along for this ride. He may not have won a Cup here (no fault of his own) but he was the face of this franchise for so long. Through thick and thin, whatever crap was going on in the outside world, you knew: 7pm, Hanks in net for the Rangers.

I think it’ll be a rough one for all of us tomorrow. So happy to see it happen but also just so sad that that ride is over. I love this current roster and where they’re going, but man. Hank, you’ll always be missed.

It really sparked the golden age of bulletin board fandom haha. It was a nice change from the pre-lockout times.

  3. The modesty of the NHL has always been one of it's best qualities. I don't watch hockey to see what celebration some guy thinks up in his hotel room in front a mirror posing himself like a clown. Let the NFL have it. I watch for the game. I personally love the modesty of NHL players. Connor McDavid doesn't need to pull sharpie out of his glove and sign the puck when he scores for people to recognize him as great. At some point the NFL started giving off the perception that individual success is more important than winning. I like the perception that the NHL player would give up a testicle to win a cup and do it while taking no credit fro their achievements

There comes a point where too much modesty creates a bunch of walking canned intermission interview answers though. Growing up we'd watch the VHS hockey tapes that would show Theo Fleury's first goal celebration, showing Tie Domi sitting on his stick like Tiger Williams, and Selanne throwing his glove up in the air to shoot it etc, and as kids we'd all try to emulate that stuff. It made things fun, and that fun has always been the greatest part about hockey despite all the hard work anyone puts into it. I wouldn't expect everyone to go crazy, but I'm more in the position that people shouldn't have to hold back because they want to be perceived a certain way.

In any case, Lafreniere is most likely under a lot of pressure right now to be an impact player, and if he can let loose a little when he's comfy, so be it.

  4. I just don't really like pads with printed elements on them... Didn't like the liberties. These are slightly better but I guess I'm a traditionalist.

The printed pads look cheap and most of the designs look like they were made by someone that is new to Adobe Illustrator and approaches everything from a generic clip art style. The print technology isn't quite there yet either, which shows in their issues with color matching, and the material has had durability issues. The original argument was that it saved weight, but other companies have been able to produce traditionally constructed pads that are super light and look a lot more premium with stitched layers.

  5. If I was going for a more remixed vibe I'd have made the sleeve part that used to be red white. Also, the numbers seem a bit odd since the previous liberty jerseys had more legible numbers that popped more. However, once they are in motion I'm sure it will be fine, but in a lot of cases it looks like teams could have made some minor tweaks that would improve the designs by a great margin. The Dallas Stars are a better example though.
  6. He was in the midst of a career year, 42 points in 51 games, at the time of the trade...

I'm biased against him because his play away from the puck and defensively often had him making the wrong choices, and his effort levels seemed more in line with the typical player who comes to NY with promise only to underachieve and then fall into slumps and invisibility. I'd expect him to have a career year playing for a contract, but even then there was a lot about his game to be frustrated with.
