Drew a Penalty
It really doesn't. They're 9 points out of a spot with much harder teams to face than Detroit in coming games. The only way they end up in "striking distance" is if they go on an actual win streak. They're going to need to do more than beat the worst team in the league by a close margin. Dunny
They pretty much have to win 6-8 in a row, or get points in the next 10, or win 9/10 type thing just to get back in it. They'd still likely be a point or three out at that point. In short, it's not going to happen, but it might!

They have 2 games in hand on those teams as well though. A win tonight might close the gap from 9 points to 7 points. If we pretend that the Rangers go on a streak where the 2 games really equals another 4 points. From that standpoint, they would close the gap to 3 points. Likely though? Not at all. They are, but so is everyone else. Let's look at what we've got left: vs DET at DET vs DAL vs TOR vs BUF vs LAK at WPG at MIN at CBJ vs BOS at CHI at CAR vs SJS Deadline There are a few "yeah, we should win this one" in there (Both DET games, LAK, maybe SJS, maybe WPG), but beyond that? Optimistically, we've got 15 of 26 points here, and while that puts us at 65 points, at best that puts us probably 10 points out. In the playoffs right now is 61 points, and Carolina isn't going to lose 13 straight games here, and neither is Philly, and neither is Toronto. Quoting Rhom from the "wait and see" thread. The Rangers face Toronto, Buffalo, Columbus, and Carolina in the stretch before the deadline. Every one of those games is a must-win if they remotely have a chance. Then you have to pick up the must-wins. Can't lose tonight, Los Angeles, San Jose or maybe Winnipeg. So as Rhom said, you're getting like 14-16 point, maybe, after being down nine. That's just two wins and an OT loss for any of Philadelphia, Carolina or Toronto over a three-week stretch. They'd effectively need to win out until the deadline for them to realistically be in any type of playoff conversation. I'm doubtful that happens especially considering there's no chance Quinn rides a hot goalie.

Everyone they are chasing has an easier schedule except for the Hurricanes.

Everyone they are chasing has an easier schedule except for the Hurricanes. Right. They play 8 games in 14 nights coming up and then have back to back weeks with 3 games in 4 nights. They're going to be exhausted. Between the quality of competition and rigorous schedule, they have such a slim shot at the playoffs. They're at the point where if they lose three straight in the coming stretch they might as well sell then.
