Tech Folks ? Chromecast vs. Samsung Smart Wi-Fi Blu Ray Player

So for Christmas I'm either going to get my dad the wifi blu ray, or Chrome cast. He's on a fixed income and doesn't want to pay for cable. He lives across the hall from my grandmother, who he "borrows" the wifi signal from, so he can technically watch TV on her optimum account...

So my question is, does Chromecast stream anything that's on your laptop? If he's watching Optimum on his laptop, via grandma's wifi signal, can he stream that to his TV with Chromecast? Or does Chromecast just use apps? If it's just apps, then I migh tas well go with the Samsung blue ray player, since he'll get the player, too.

Thoughts? Ideas? Comments? Go fack myself?

Chromecast is on the verge of an app explosion. Google is about to release the dev kit for it next month and there are a bunch of developers ready and willing to make content for it.

I'm probably going to pick one up after Christmas. For the price and what it can do it beats a smart tv all day, especially since a lot of smart TV's have shitty user interfaces.

best buy has it for 29.99. I wouldve picked one up yesterday if they werent sold out.

I wouldnt really use it a lot right now, but if/when I get my own place in the summer I probably would. I would have that, my amazon prime, parents' HBOGo, and probably subscribe to Netflix and then not get a cable box

My Chromecast came yesterday. Apparently you can stream almost anything if you use Google Chrome and install the Chromecast extension:

You can then broadcast tabs to your TV, which can have video playing, I believe at full screen if you want.

Here's someone doing it using Amazon Prime:

Gotcha. Thanks! This sealed the deal.

Oh, one thing that isn't so publicized, it requires power. There is a USB connection that comes with it and a plug you can put on the end, however, the cord isn't that long. Luckily, on my TV there is a USB port on the side above the HDMI ports for programming the TV and it was powered, so this was a non-issue. It is something to consider though.
