Phil
1. In the end, the Predators wisely decided that it was time to end the stalemate with Roman Josi. They’d agreed to the permanent no-move clause and front-loaded structure. The final challenge was getting over $9 million per year, which they eventually did. Now, it’s done, no longer an issue hanging over the organization, and all the focus turns to chasing the Stanley Cup. Eight-year deals for 30-year-olds are controversial, but there are three critical things here: Nashville knows Josi better than anyone else; he’s one of the best defencemen in the NHL; and they are in the window to win. Would that window still be open if, in some crazy alternate universe, Josi walked in July? https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/31-thoughts-calgary-flames-tensions-rising/
Albatrosss
didn't realize he was 30 years old. their caphit is over $9M a year until he's
Phil
But their window-to-win is through the first half of it. It's a risk, but it's calculated.
Albatrosss
its only calculated if they win. if they don't, its a ballsy risk
Dunny
It's dumb. These contracts are garbage the moment they're signed, this is no different. It's untradable as of today. They never work out. And they're a cup contender like 15 other teams are.
Phil
its only calculated if they win. if they don't, its a ballsy risk The calculation is irrelevant to the payoff. They're taking a risk. If it works, they won't care about the back half. If it doesn't, they probably will. It's dumb. These contracts are garbage the moment they're signed, this is no different. It's untradable as of today. They never work out. And they're a cup contender like 15 other teams are. Yup, but they're getting signed left-and-right. GMs and Owners can't help themselves. They've largely moved away from the same for more middling-types, but the big boys are still getting their due far too late in their careers. BrooksBurner
Trouba's contract at 25 already looks better. And yes, I realize Josi is currently a better defenseman. Let's check back in after 2 years.

I think 2 years is too soon. Josi's a stud. I hope that by the time Trouba hits 30 he plays like Josi.
Gravesy
It's one of those deals that you can live with if they win a cup in their window. If they don't it's total aids. At the end of the day they didn't have much choice. I don't see how they could walk away from Josi at this point.

Either sign him at a number you hate or get significanly worse and trade him for whatever package of picks and players, none of whom will come close to being Roman Josi. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Kind of feels like the Preds are on the downward slope of the bell curve where they peaked two years ago, but they went out and signed Duchene to big money so they basically locked themselves in to go for it the minute they did that.
