Phil
Billionaire Tilman Fertitta, the new owner of the Houston Rockets, didn?t rule out a National Hockey League franchise for Houston during his first press conference Oct. 10 at the Toyota Center after acquiring the team for $2.2 billion. It would be the second NHL franchise in Texas behind the Dallas Stars. ?Do I want to see Toyota Center filled up 300 nights a year? Definitely.? Fertitta said. "I would put an NHL team here tomorrow (but it has to make sense)." NHL executive Larry Tanenbaum is ?very excited? to meet with Fertitta, Rockets CEO Tad Brown said at the press conference. Houston and the NHL have discussed deals in the past to bring a team to the Bayou City but nothing has worked out, Brown said. ?Everything?s open,? Brown said. ?Tilman is aggressive.? https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2017/10/10/nhl-team-could-be-in-the-works-for-houston-rockets.html
Mike
I have a better chance of getting head from my wife tonight than Houston does of having a successful hockey market.
Future
The Aeros were one of the more successful AHL teams, in terms of attendance.
Phil
Attendance is only one part. Corporate support and sponsorship, a beneficial arena deal (one already exists -- a big plus), population growth rate, median household income, etc. Like Dallas, I don't believe there's state tax, either. phillyb
Houston's population growth has been and will continue to be on the rise. It will soon takeover the third most populous US city, if it hasn't already.
fletch
houston is huge, so only a small percentage would have to support hockey for it to be successful. all depends on how good the ownership and PR is
