  1. This is year six of the Goalie Tiers, and for the uninitiated, here’s the concept. I ask a panel of NHL GMs, assistant GMs, head coaches and goalie coaches to rate every starting goalie on a scale of 1 to 5, with a one-rating reserved for goalies who should challenge for a Vezina down to a 5, goalies who shouldn’t be starters. The panel is given anonymity to encourage honesty. The results are averaged and sorted into tiers.

Here’s the breakdown of this year’s 17-person panel: Seven NHL general managers, four NHL head coaches, three assistant GMs and three goalie coaches.

    Tier 1:

    Vasilevsky

    Price

    Bobrovsky

    Tier 2:

    Gibson

    Rask

    Bishop

    Rinne

    Fleury

    Holtby

    F. Andersen

    Murray

    Hellebuyck

    Binnington

    Tier 3:

    Lundqvist

“That’s a tough one because he’s older and he has a really young team,” said a goalie coach. “I don’t think he’s going to be elite anymore because he has a young squad (around him).”

The mix of a young team along with an aging goalie was the reason one panelist gave him a four rating.

“When the bad nights are bad, it’s bad,” he said. “But let’s say he got traded to Tampa Bay, could he have an amazing year? He probably could.”

    Dubnyk

    Quick

    Varlamov

    Raanta

    Hart

    Grubauer

    Crawford

    Markstrom

    Jones

    Howard

    Rittich

    Mrazek

    Schneider

    Anderson

    Korpisalo

    Hutton

    Koskinen

This accounts for team around them, so it's hard to argue much here.

  2. I believe after watching Smith, he may really earn a spot on the roster and not as the 7th D. He worked hard and didn't take any stupid penalties so far. I was impressed by how hard he hustles in the play as well as behind the play against the Islanders.

He is going to make it hard for the team to send him to Hartford if he keeps playing like he has been.

    - NYCKrash....LGR!!

I think him ending up in Hartford is more a cap thing, but yea.

Smith's problem is that he's not instinctive enough for his athleticism. He's like Skjei in that sense. That's why he'll be mostly strong at defending the blueline and 1-1, but shit at making a first pass.

  3. Depends on the type of games you like. For multiplayer, I'd lean Xbox. For single player campaign games, probably PS4. If you like sports games, MLB the show is amazing on PS4.

Really on the single player stuff? What games? I don't play much but that's mostly b/c I'm not big on online.

  4. This and Parks and Rec, I never got into. I watched enough of both to try, but they just didn't do anything for me. Compared with It's Always Sunny and Curb which had similar air dates, they pale in comparison.

Even other network comedies like Community and Scrubs were funnier, with the former being one of the smartest written comedies I've ever seen.

Community is criminally underrated, but it didn't have much staying power.

The Office and Always Sunny I think are the two best sitcoms ever. I couldn't pick one.

  5. The office is possibly one of the greatest shows ever. But do we need to revive it? can't we just let good shows be what they were?

hopefully they do a revival well, but I wonder if it will end up just being a cash grab that lasts a season and people watch because of 'Office' Nostalgia

edit: im also seeing this thread was originally from 2017 and isn't recent news so nevermind

Well, of course it's a cash grab, that's how network TV works.

Something starring half the cast could still be fairly funny - Andy, Dwight and Gabe alone can carry a lot of water - but they'd have a hard time capturing any of the original charisma. And besides that, they'd have to cover A LOT of ground to get any of the characters back in the office (heh). Who was even left at Dunder Mifflin? Dwight, Angela, Oscar, Erin and Gabe?

  6. My guess is this. If Fox compares anything to DeAngelo, he needs to bump over him.

And I’ll also predict he starts seeing as much, if not more PP time than Trouba

I think Fox is third-pair, PP1 by like December. Basically Shattenkirk lol

It's weird to think, but there's a decent chance that Trouba is their third-best RHD on the PP. He's got the hardest shot, but he hasn't looked particularly great at getting it through yet.

  7. The reality of that is so sad. Outside of those two playoff runs and one or two regular seasons he really was as mediocre as it gets.

There was a tweet somewhere that I can't find...

Basically it said that the only difference between Eli and Joe Flacco is his last name and the NASCAR package lol

  8. The two paragraphs that matter most:

To fully understand how Kakko creates sequences like those with obscene frequency, we must first understand the little skill details of his game. Namely: Physicality, footwork, and puckhandling. It’s impossible to separate the three in Kakko’s case because they work in symphony to raise their impact far beyond their isolated ability.

It’s essential to understand the purpose of all those cutbacks, hits, and protection. Kakko is generally using those maneuvers to create space; not just any kind of space, but the area to pivot and face the slot. On the perimeter, the most dangerous position for a player to be is facing the slot because it allows them to (a) identify their passing and shooting options, (b) identify defenders, and © provides escape options in all four directions.
  9. Why in the world are we using Shattenkirk as a barometer for what DeAngelo should be paid?

Because using comparable players as reference points is how contracts work in sports. From ADA's perspective..."I'm better than Shattenkirk, I should get more money." This is fundamental in contract negotiations.

Are you saying that Pionk is irrelevant too?

  10. McKegg was solid, and I think he won a very good percentage of his faceoffs as well. really good effort from a much needed position.

I'm really liking Fox's hockey IQ so far. Seems he knows where he's going with the puck as soon as he gets it. He also is good at making space in the offensive zone. He also plays a little bigger than he is. We may have snagged a diamond in the rough with him...we shall see.

I know it's a small sample, but I think McKegg and Boo can adequately handle any 4th-line duties that Namest/Strome might have. Those 4 are all pretty redundant with how the top-6 is shaking out, so I wonder if the delay in trading Namest/Strome was making sure other guys could replace them there.

Yea, Fox was good. He actually looked bigger than I thought he was, too. I think it's only a matter of time before he's on PP1 instead of Trouba. Just looks a lot more natural in the OZ.

  11. He played 60 games. Half of which he played well, and the other half not so much. The rest of the season he was benched for one reason or another. They aren't lowballing him. They have offered him a fair 1 year contract to prove himself, especially given he is an RFA without arbitration rights and limited experience. The more time that passes without him signing, the more I see DeAngelo in an unfavorable light. He should have more confidence in his abilities to make the Rangers want to pay him next year, and less ego about what he's proven to this point in his career (which isn't much).

A contract lower than some ELCs (including Rykov and Lindgren) for a defenseman who scored 30 points and played 19:00/night is a lowball offer, period. Pionk got $3m and Shatty got $1.75m. How on Earth is $875k a fair offer?

  12. I tend to buy every two years; they did a really, really good job with some of the changes to stick and puck physics. Feels really in-control.

Yea, I'm more on the 4-year rule lol...12-16-18 (because it was free) and I just bought 20 but haven't had a chance to play yet.

All the reviews on 20 that I've read have been pretty good in regards to gameplay.

  13. Exactly right. It's a business and so his contract is such that he has no leverage. If he wants to have leverage next year he should be doing all he can to earn a huge payday in July. His only other option is likely not being in the NHL at all considering all the bridges he's burned.

If they're lowballing him now, how would he have any better leverage at the end of this season? He's just going to get lowballed again. More likely, his numbers will decrease because he's not going to get PP time.

He has no motivation to play right now, because he has no opportunity to improve his status this year. It's the Rangers who are screwing up, because they're just letting a talented, young asset sit and rot.
