  1. NHL coach vs College coach

Gallant will have a much looser system, allowing the players to play to their strengths. You wont see players sprinting every where. You'll see strong pressure and support. Neutral zone will be much more clogged vs constant odd man rushes/backing up into the goalie. You'll see the Rangers forcing teams to skate through them, rather than the Rangers players sprinting out of position in fear of getting benched. Rangers have some good height, i guess you'd say. We will see them using that size and reach to really slow down teams in the NZ. It will be much less 'get at the puck' and more of a team system forcing other teams to make tough choices with the puck. Defensively, I think they'll be a bit tighter and more stationary in the defensive zone, more in a trap than a constant pressure. But again, Gallant isnt a structured system guy. Playing long and loose should really allow some of the skilled forwards to really show that skill (but could also show their weakness, especially defensively) I also think we'll see a bit more consistency with dealing with players. He'll bench the top guys and double shift a 4th line if they're playing well.

Good stuff. Thorough analysis. Makes a lot of sense and is encouraging to hear.

  2. Certain systems, coach’s expectations can certainly influence a player one way or another. Example, we saw a softer Kreider under AV than Torts.

Systems with moving may have a few more hits while a system of clogging requires opponents to fight through more. When you have a big, skilled team, clogging and taking up space is most likely getting a better result than skill players chasing trying to hit

Kreider is better utilized when he uses his big body in a more contact heavy game. Gallant probably will utilize this a whole lot more than Quinn did. Kreider is not a consistent enough scorer to just be a skill guy and get away with it.

We lose some offense but he is very tough to play against and one of the better 2 way guys in the league.

Just don't trade Strome for a bag of chips like you did Buch please. And don't swing to pendulum too far the other way sacrificing offense for toughness either....

  4. New coach, New GM, Ownership mandate

There is going to be a big philosophical shift in the way we play next year. That means some guys that we as fans probably don’t want to go are going to go. Buch may have been moreso because of the glut of forwards and cap implications. But Strome on the block to means they are ready to trade him away too.

I am not in love with this because I think the scoring was a beautiful thing with this team and I don't want to bite off our nose to spite our face or swing the pendulum too far the other way.

However we don't see the finished personel puzzle just quite yet so no need to panic but I am not getting the warm and fuzzies with Drury just quite yet.

How far are they going to take this toughness thing? Are we going to get another legit Center soon? I think they want to add more vet savvy and winning players to the equation and that does make sense because the team is still extremely young.

  5. Zibanejad

    Strome

    Chytil

    Rooney

    Optional: Goodrow

We're not exactly short a center. To sign someone like Landeskog for a huge sum of money and then ask him to do something he's never done makes absolutely no sense. Assuming another year of growth from Kakko, Krav, and Lafreniere, this team, as constructed, is a playoff team.

Another D and another 4th liner and they're in the mix to make something happen next season.

If Strome goes we won't be that deep here and after Zib its quite dicey.

  6. I wish I could say I'm excited, but I'm really just thinking this many new players will need half a season to even find their groove. And I think the team will struggle mightily to score.

Lets not overreact to one half decent scorer being traded away.

We still have a bunch of potential 20+ goal scorers on this team right now:

    Panarin

    Zibenejad

    Kreider

    Lafreniere (12 in 56 as a rookie, should easily reach 20+ as a 2nd year in 82)

Kaako (entering year 3 with a better coach will likely play on a top 2 line)

Kravstov (very talented and has went through some growing last couple years)

And Strome is a high assist guy

And then some pretty offensively skilled defensemen

Our problem is not scoring really. It was getting beat up by the better teams.
