  2. Allan Walsh

    @walsha

    The NHL is soft floating the idea with media if no deal with the NHLPA is reached on the Return to Play, it can unilaterally invoke Force Majeure and cancel the 2020-21 season

    There are so many flaws to this, I don?t know where to start. Does the NHL really think it can demand an additional $300M in concessions from players after negotiating the financial terms of the 20-21 season DURING the pandemic 4 months ago? 1h

    The Players agreed to accept 72% of their contracts due to the pandemic. NHL owners cannot now assert they don?t like the deal, demand $300M more from the Players and if the Players don?t give in, cancel the season by invoking Force Majeure

    1h

    In reality, if the NHL cancels the 20-21 season because the Players won?t give another $300M in concessions, that is a LOCKOUT, which is expressly prohibited by CBA Art. 7.1 (b) If the NHL lawyers are advising owners they have a winning case here, I suggest they go back to law school. Owners will be subjecting themselves to billions in potential damages if they falsely invoke Force Majeure to cancel the season. End

    It gets worse

    You think that’s bad? It gets worse. Right now it appears that teams will only play teams within their own divisions in a 60 game season. That means eight games or more against teams in your division. Yes, Tampa gets to play Detroit eight times. The Rangers get to play Boston and Washington eight times.

    It’s going to be great for rivalries, but the absence of any balance in the makeup of these division is glaring. Face it, in this format, the Rangers are going to be screwed.

    Can they fix it?

    If the NHL goes with the standard playoff format it will be totally unfair. That would put the top three teams in each division in the playoffs with two additional wild card teams. The NHL needs to scrap this completely and try to make playoff participation equitable. How they do that will be difficult.

    A solution would be to forget about geography and the East-West alignment. Put the Canada Division into a Conference with the East. Put the Central and West Divisions together. Then, allow the top two teams in each division in the playoffs, and then pick the wild card teams from the best of the rest in their conference.

    Even that won’t work that well. The Rangers could finish fifth in the East, but lose out on the wild card because the fourth place team in the Canada Division has a better record against weaker competition.

  4. OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators announced today that the team has signed forward Micheal Haley to a one-year, two-way contract. The agreement holds a value $700,000 in the National Hockey League and $200,000 in the American Hockey League

  5. A number of the NHL's general managers are calling for the league to once again tweak its draft lottery format.

    During a virtual meeting Friday, multiple executives around the league argued to increase the odds for the teams that finish lowest in the standings, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

    The Detroit Red Wings were "incredibly upset" this year after dropping to the fourth pick despite having the best odds for the No. 1 selection. Detroit has support for its position but the league asked for specific proposals, Friedman adds.

  7. Thornton is gettin ready to play, that is certain. Where he will land is to be determined because he is not signing with anyone right now. When he does sign, he will likely go for a contender or back home to San Jose.

    However, what if Joe would like one season playing at Madison Square Garden? What if the Rangers have a million dollars to give him for one season? It isn’t out of the realm of possibility, especially if things turn out badly with Ryan Strome and his upcoming arbitration case.
