  1. You’re going to be waiting years for this team to be a contender regardless if they sign him or not. You don’t know who’s going to be available in the years to come. To say you do is ridiculous. Panarin doesn’t make this team a contender. Signing him does put you to the cap though and adds a $12m player for 7 years probably with a ntc to boot. You all say he’s going to be the same player at 32 that he is now. Also based on nothing but hope. Yes panarin is a great player today but the team as a whole sucks. There is no way to meet in the middle here. I understand your point and you are entitled to it. Im not arguing that he won’t put up points next year, he will. However what does his addition mean to the team? How much better are they? What does adding his cap hit sacrifice in terms of moves they won’t be able to make? We would never know. What we will know and I’m sure argue in the future is his success and the teams success or lack there of. Right now this team has no foundation. I just don’t believe building that foundation should start with $12 m cap hits. Macdavid or Matthews sure but he’s not that. There are moves to be made in the future. Multiple good teams are up against the cap. They are ripe for the picking. Being able to take advantage of that takes cap space first and foremost. Everyone is so impatient to spend the cap space. We differ on opinions here. I understand and respect yours yet I disagree. You may not respect mine and that’s fine but you will not change my mind here.

  2. I get it. I’m not spending that kind of money on a wing. He’s not a 27 year old Patrick Kane and he’s not a 27 year old Ovie. It’s not how I would allocate the cap. I understand your points. I just don’t agree with paying him. I do think spending on elite defense would be wise just not someone with such a horrid injury history. That doesn’t age well.

The rangers are a pretty bare slate. We have different opinions on how to rebuild. Your view is panarin as a way to speed up the process, I view a player like that as one of the final pieces. Nobody can say who is right. I’m sure panarin will have success here but will the team? That’s all I care about.

Finally don’t underestimate how much of an asset cap space is. Having it allows your gm to take advantage of other gms who are in cap trouble. This rebuild needs all kinds of prudent moves. Eliminate the cap space and you severely limit yourself from those advantages.

He's 9th in the league in points (12th in ppg) since he came to the NHL. 7 of the top 9 are wings. If you wait for a player better, and the same age or younger, to get to free agency you'll be waiting forever.

  3. This is what I'm worried about. Panarin, Karlsson, Lundqvist in goal, eff the rebuild. Let's be a middle of the pack playoff team right away, our young players can learn from vets, we can win a Stanley Cup in two years!

That is the New York Rangers way. We brought in the Oiler-Rangers to get us 1994. We came close in the SCF against the Kings. We are New York. We don't have to wait. Ignore our track record from 1940 to present.

Except the UFA's they are looking to sign are under 30, they'll have made 7 to 9 first round picks in the last 3 years, and traded for a number of prospects who are already contributing...

Signing Panarin and Karlsson doesn't change the fact they've acquire a shit load of assets over the last 3 years.

  4. Each scenario is awful, unless chytil is ready to take on that role. Why you wouldn’t insulate him though is hard to understand. It wouldn’t be so bad slitting him there the problem is the depth below him. They are unpolished kids too, who maybe over their heads.

The more I think about the more I’m against panarin. Signing him leaves little to no money to address what’s actually wrong with this team or even stabilize this team so players can properly develop. On top of that Hartford isn’t a great place for developing players either. Both of those things can be addressed by adding depth throughout the organization.

I think people put too much emphasis on line numbers. Its not that important. You can easily start a game with:

    Vesey - Zib - Kravtsov

    Panarin - Chytil - Buch

    Lemuiex - Howden - Names

You can 'insulate' kids with how you deploy them. Kotkaniemi plays 14 minutes a night and gets 63% OZ starts. You can easily give that to Chytil or Kravtsov in the above lineup. Look at Dubois' deployment with Panarin on his wing. Need a goal late in the third? You can easily put Panarin and Zib together. Protecting a lead? You can easily drop Chytil and Kravtsov down and move Names and Fast up. And that's just next season. The year after, everyone's better.

  5. My biggest concern for next year is not adding a nhl center or two to this team. After Zibanejad who do they have? I know the kids but I?m not sure counting on that is a good idea. And I?m talking about their development not winning games. Pressure is going to mount rightly or not for them to produce. It would be nice to shelter them if need be. If they surprise them great but there should be a plan in place to avoid them struggling as much as possible.
Zib is 1. Howden is 3. For two there is multiple scenarios. A) They moved Chytil back to center last night. We'll see how he looks in camp going into his sophomore year. B) They can draft a center in the top 5 that makes the team a la Kotkaniemi. C) Worse comes to worst both Strome or Names can center the #2 line and I'd prefer either of them to signing Dzingel.

  6. Now I?m whining for defending my point of view. So you insult me because you can?t change my mind. Seems reasonable. I?m sure if I respond in kind I will get an infraction

I was referring to king and Phil when I said both. And both had the same argument when shattenkirk was a ufa. Just forget that this time they are right and having a different opinion is obviously wrong headed.

    Classic, always the victim.

Oh, and stop comparing Shattenkirk and Richards to Karlsson and Panarin. It's not even close.

  7. Assbackwards way of building a team but ok. All those young guys will need to get paid before those contracts end. Assuming they all grow into what?s expected you will have a problem five years from now. Hopefully ek can still walk by then.
Is it? Building around players under 30 and having 8 1st rounders in 3 years? All those young players will be RFAs. They wont all sign big long term deals. If they're all happen to be that good that's a great problem to have. There's not a great precedent for guys holding out. Drouin? Nylander?...Tampa and Toronto seem fine.

  8. Doesn?t matter. I?m not advocating signing any massive long term ufas anytime soon. Not until the foundation is set. Right now there is no core.
Panarin, Karlsson, and Zib would be the core. Under 30 years old. Supported by 7 or 8 1st round picks over a three year span. Plus Hajek, Rykov, Howden, Lemieux, and the other young pieces added over the last couple years.

  9. Ok.

Columbus 2016-2017. No panarin. 108 points

    2017-2018 with panarin. 97 points

This year 81 points with roughly 12 games left

Not saying he made them worse but hard to say he made them better what can definitely be said is that the rangers can go forward and compete next year and beyond without him. Columbus adding panarin was much like the rangers when they added Nash. It made sense and come playoff time you want that game breaker which he is. Problem is the rangers aren?t ready to contend. When they are game breakers become available. Like Nash did for us or St. Louis. How well it worked out isn?t the point. They were there.

Look at Bob's #'s, when he won the Vezina, in 16-17.

    How's Chicago since Panarin left?

  10. Zibanejad is also signed to a contract that is half to what panarin is going to get. Which is the entire point. The term and the money.
Zib and Skjei are also the only players signed for more than the next two years. Sign Panarin and Karlsson for $22 million, plus Skjei and Zib is about $33 million. That gives you $50 million plus to deal with all your RFAs. Kravtsov, Rykov, Shesty, Miller, Lundkvist, and any 2019 picks will still be on their ELC.

  11. "When healthy".

Applies to every player in a contact sport...

I honestly haven't watched much of him since he went to the Sharks, but even on one foot, I can't help but feel like he's so far superior to anything the Rangers can hope to skate in place of his would-be roster spot next year that you have to at least entertain the idea.

    Like, the difference between this:

    Skjei / Karlsson

    Hajek / DeAngelo

    Staal / Rykov

    Claesson

    And this:

    Skjei / DeAngelo

    Hajek / Pionk

    Staal / Rykov

    Claesson

    Is fucking stark.

As evidenced by his #'s this season, Karlsson's foot is fine. He's out with a groin injury.

  12. I agree. I see Panarin as being like Datsyuk in terms of lasting a long time. The only thing about Panarin is that he seems to take some nights off. He was breathtaking when Columbus got the jump on Washington last year, but then wasn't a big factor. I've definitely seen games when he was pretty ordinary. Now Panarin is at a totally different level, but can you imagine how excited you would be by Vesey or Buchnevich if you happened to just catch a couple of their "on" games.

Or the eventual cup winner stopped dicking around with Grubauer, put their Vezina winning goalie back in, and decided they weren't going to let one guy beat them.

  13. Not necessarily on either. What does kreider want contract wise? What does the situation look like come deadline next year. Zibanejad is under contract at a steal so not sure where he comes into question. To me Zibanejad is a core piece going forward. That can change over time but he seems like a great place to start building. To be honest I?m not sure on kreider.

Panarin is only a year and a half older than Zib, has 168 less games of wear and tear on him, and doesn't have the injury history. Having the pair of them as a 1-2 punch at a combined $16M for the next 3 years is a no brainer and a great place to start building.

  14. I think you have to try to sign Panarin.

If you get Panarin, I think you have to think about signing Karlsson.

    Just Karlsson... I'm iffy.

If neither, I'd rather not spend on random UFAs or Duchene or anything like that. I think at that point you might explore trading Kreider, and possibly tank again next season. I mean, this team, as is, aint doing shit without some change, and if you are not adding 2 high quality players through free agency, then you stick to "developing"

    This.

The main issue all year has been D. Replacing Pionk with Karlsson is already a huge improvement. Hajek and Rykov should be improvements over Smith, McQuaid, Cleasson, (and probably Staal at least mobility wise).

I think adding Paranin and Karlsson next year with those two other young d-men makes this a playoff team in the metro next year. Could even get an added bonus from our first rounder this summer depending on where it falls. Then in the 2nd or at worst 3rd year of the Panarin and Karlsson contract's Miller, Lundkvist, and the last 2019 first rounders should be pushing for spots. In year 3 Panarin is 30 and Karlsson is 31. That timing is fine. As they hit the back end of their contracts Chytil, Kravtsov, Miller, Lundqvist, and the 2019 first round picks should be taking over the bulk of the production anyway.

  15. I’m liking Newhook, as I begin my scouting. He’s listed a bit lower on most boards, 12-15, so another “off the board” pick for ripple to complain about.

Dach is slow and Krebs is a character guy. So we are about to be an angry and disappointed fan base, again

U18's are in April. Interested in seeing Byram and Broberg for our potential 6 to 9ish pick. Then, depending on how all the conditional picks work out, try to trade up into the teens for Newhook or Kaliyev.
