I Was Today Years Old When I Learned...

So wait, I've got a good one. Learned this during a Pirates baseball game broadcast today.

We all know pirates are always seen with eye patches and I think most assume that those eye patches were due to eye injuries from sword fights or other dangerous pirate activities.

Turns out that the Pirates actually used eye patches to maintain night vision in one eye. They would put the patch on over one eye if they were on deck in the bright sun and then could switch the patch to the other eye if they had to go do something below deck in the dim lighting and would be able to see well immediately rather than having to adjust to the lighting change.

but then when they switched the patch to the "light" eye, that eye would go "dark" sighted...
