Bolts have traded Jonathan Drouin and a conditional 2018 6th round pick to the Habs for their defenseman rookie Mikhail Sergachev and a conditional 2018 2nd round pick. Sergachev was the ninth pick of the 2016 draft.

This is a really good trade for both sides.

For Tampa Bay, they knew they would have to trade players away to stay under the cap. They have Palat and Johnson up for new contracts this year. They have Kucherov coming up in two off-seasons. They have Namestnikov coming up next summer. It's a glut of talent and a problem most NHL teams want to have. Drouin was undeniably good, had some run-ins with management and they made the decision that he would have to go to make room for the rest.

That they got back a potential #1 defenseman in Sergachev is amazing. The youngest defensemen on Tampa Bay are both 26, Hedman and Sustr. Sustr is trash. Garrison and Coburn are both way past their primes. They have three young guys in the AHL that could be pushing down the road: Koekkoek (former 1st rounder), Thomas and Masin. Having Hedman, Sergachev and Koekkoek as your D of the future puts them in a great place. Sergachev is also an asset that doesn't need to be protected in the expansion draft.

As for Montreal, they get their immediate replacement if/when Galchenyuk gets traded. They are still struggling for center depth, but now can target a center in a trade and now have to worry about getting a winger back. Montreal has also done a great job not giving out any NMC/NTCs. There are only three on the roster: Price, Petry, and Emelin. Weber will obviously be the third protected defenseman. The only forwards worth protecting are Pacioretty, Gallagher, Danault, Lehkonen (if even eligible) and Galcheyuk if that. Add Drouin to the list and they are at six, with room for one more. Most likely they are exposing Plekanec. This also allows Montreal time to work out a trade, and not rush into it with the expansion draft looming. It definitely hurts to lose a top defensive prospect as talented as Sergachev, but Montreal's main issue has been goal-scoring. That, and Price can make up for most mistakes by that defense.

Excellent info Czech. There is one huge aspect that you did not mention. This deal does not happen at all w/o Brayden Point and his emergence in Tampa.

All the talk down in Tampa (my folks and sis live on the Gulf Coast so I get down there a bit) is that it was a fate accompli that they were going to trade for a top pairing dman. What I found interesting is that it seemed predetermined that the asset to do so it would be either Point or Drouin. Supposedly the determining factor was that Yzerman realized he would get more in return for Drouin. In this case Montreal preferred Drouin, which is interesting. I would have asked for Point.

I have to imagine the salary due Drouin also tipped the scales. Yzerman will never admit it but he probably feels good that he moved Drouin on his terms and dealt the guy who was a malcontent. This move sends subtle messages to his team. It says, he is in control, he is loyal to those who want to be here (now can sign Johnson), and he will accommodate if you want out, but only when he is ready.
