Measuring a trip in time is such a lovely thing about rural life. I have so many friends who do that, that I've started doing it too.

It's actually quite convenient.

In Western NY this is actually how I measure a trip. When someone asks me how far is it from Geneseo to Batavia, I go 35-40 minutes not 33 miles

The greater the distance and the fewer the landmarks, the easier this is. We measure flights in hours, train rides in minutes, so why not car rides?

That's all hockey parents use:

Where's the game on Saturday?

Aston.

Shit.

Yeah, about an hour and 45.

I've never heard any use miles.

Most people don't. Once in a while someone uses mileage. I just break it down in my head quickly so I don't run the risk of looking like a moron. 80 miles? Oh yeah, sure, no problem, little over an hour.

It's actually common in Europe and I know plenty of Americans who do it too. I also know city folks who count distances in subway or bus stops. "Yeah, it's five stops on the X line from here." Which really only works for locals.
