If you think back to the 94 team or even the team that lost to the Kings, the one consistency was that everyone knew their roles. Having a Nemchinov allows a player like Messier to do what he was paid to do. There were a lot of role players in both teams.
This Rangers team lacks depth. The 3rd and 4th lines don't know their roles. This means guys like Mika, Panarin, Kreider, etc. have to pick up that slack which basically takes away from what they are supposed to be focusing on, namely offense. So to me, they really need to sure up their depth guys. Plus, their defense need a LOT of help.
But remember, this is a multi-faceted rebuild and it takes time to put all the pieces together. Next year's team will most likely take another few steps in getting closer to the vision they have. J.D. is a good hockey mind. I think he knows what he wants and needs. It's just a matter of how long it'll take to get there.
