I "got" it, I just didn't care. The story telling was far too convoluted and unnecessarily complex, IMO.
I agree, it felt like one of those movies that is unnecessarily complex, but easy to understand to make people feel smart when they get it.
It also seemed like the bad people in the movies fortunes were always better than the good peoples, which kind of goes against the entire premise of the movie
