          Hello Everyone!

This is my first post in a very long time. The subject is long term contracts. The team has a player they like, so they give him a lucrative contract over 5 years or longer. However, a downside to that is how long will that player be a top notch player before his play diminishes. The organization is stuck with a player that is being paid millions of dollars, but whose play does not justify the salary. Along with that, these no trade clauses further locks in a player whose contribution to the team, and the organization is stuck with the contract, which effects the salary cap, and the ability for the team to acquire new players. How do you feel about this subject?

Personally, I would always avoid any contract that’s longer than 5 years or will carry past a player’s 34th/35th birthday-

Unless it’s a long contract on a young player- 25/26 or younger, it’s best to avoid them.

But it’s often a double edged sword.

There’s always a team out there that will hand out the type of contract to the player that you’re trying to avoid… so you may miss out on that player if you aren’t willing to meet his demands in terms of contract length.

Stay away of giving out NMC , NTC like its fucking candy

You’d love too.

And honestly, IMO, that’s really something that should be reserved for a select few….

Huge free agent signings of superstar players and homegrown guys of a similar stature.

Thats really it.

But again… there’s that double edged sword.

There is always some team, some GM, somewhere in the league that the player can get what he wants from.

And if a player wants a certain amount of money or term or trade protection, and you won’t do it, you’ll likely lose out on the player.

Did I hear recently that the league is proposing max-length contracts to encourage, what, player movement? Was the proposal 5 years?

Wow. I would be shocked if the NHLPA didn't push back incredibly hard on that.
