Who Are the Leading Candidates to Make the Team? What Are Biggest Camp Battles?

Recommended Posts

And finally what is your best guess on what the starting line-up look like?

Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Reilly Smith, Filip Chytil, Vincent Trocheck, Artemi Panarin, Kaapo Kakko, and Alexis Lafreniere. Plus, Will Cuylle coming off his strong rookie campaign, and Sam Carrick, who just signed a three-year deal in free agency as a center, are both likely to make the team. You would also have to assume the Rangers would want at least one of Adam Edstrom or Jonny Brodzinski on the roster because of their versatility in playing both wing and center. Under that scenario, 11-12 forwards would make the team.

I think they'll carry 14 forwards to start the season. Kreider, Zibanejad, Smith, Panarin, Trocheck, Lafraniere, Cuylle, Chytil, Kakko, Edstrom, Carrick, Rempe, Vesey & Brodzinski.  7 D. Lindgren, Fox, Miller, Schneider, Jones, Trouba, Ruhwedel.

Thanks! No Othmann possible? How about that defenseman Mancini that apparently is playing really well?

What RJ said. I think it's pretty straightforward who is making the team. Edstrom is really the only 'new' guy that will be a regular on the team. Othmann and Berard really haven't impressed much and will be sent down. Mancini has looked good, and will probably be the first call-up if there is an injury on defense. He needs regular playing time down in the AHL, though.

There really isn't room for Othmann unless he turns it on the rest of training camp and forces them to keep him on the big club.  Don't see it happening though.  Mancini is going to be the top pairing RD in Hartford more than likely.

If we're being honest about this, there's exactly one genuine roster spot in contention, and that's Rempe's. Fourth line wing. Everything else is accounted for; lock, stock, and barrel.

Yeah, I don’t see many other “battles” as we and most other teams see in camp during most seasons. The Rangers lineup is just about locked in.

I think they would have loved to see Othmann come in, knock the door down and force them into making some difficult decisions. But I don’t think he’s quite there yet. He’s looked good but not good to the point where they have to consider changing the complexion of the roster. He would have needed to have a camp similar to what Duclair had for us back in 2014 to make that type of decision IMO.

So, yeah. I would have to agree at this point. I’d say this lineup is as close to being a given as there have been in years past. He’s wanted competition. I’m sure he’s getting it. But I don’t see anyone really beating any of the obvious people out of spot right now.

How good has Edstrom looked?

If Lavi is the guy we think he is then he'll be thinking about how to improve last season's lineup, not how to run it back again.

As an example: Jimmy Vesey should not make the team over any of the young guys we got a look at last season or Othmann, he probably should not make the team over Berard at this point.

Vesey is probably the 13th forward.

We'd be better off with Brodzinski as the 13th forward since he is a natural center who can play the wings also.

That leaves a 4th line of Othmann or Berard - Rempe -Edstrom with one of the towers at C.

You're forgetting they signed Carrick to center the 4th line.  Brodzinski is probably going to be the 14th forward.

Berard and Othmann probably played themselves into Hartford last night. Neither are ready for primetime, let them marinate. It's not like they are needed to plug holes in the lineup right now.

Yep agreed. I’ve agreed with Phil for a little bit that Berard is probably more NHL ready for what potentially is open for the Rangers at the moment. But he doesn’t look all the way there yet.

Said it in another thread that in an ideal world, Othmann shows up and forces his way on to the club in camp similar to how Duclair did back in 2014. Not the case. He’ll be fine. But agree that he definitely needs more time to put it all together. Just that it would have been nice to see him take the step, grab a spot and potentially help out in a scoring role maybe even in the Top-6.

Regardless, believe in both long term.

So you're saying the Bread Line is actually the BIFF line?

I could get down with that if Laf started throwing his weight around some.

We be   better off if we can replace Vesey and Brodzinski  ,Othman would be upgrade over Vesey minus the experience

Idk, Vesey has been a pretty reliable swiss army knife for us. I feel like Othmann just isn't ready for the jump especially to take a fourth line role playing 10 min per night. Too much offensive talent we hope translates to the NHL eventually.
