Mancini Time?

The best place for Mancini's development is top AHL minutes, I doubt they keep him around as a 7th or a 6th in a limited role with sheltered minutes.

I mean, based on what I'm reading, he projects as a bottom-pairing defender, anyway. But you're probably not wrong about top AHL minutes being best for continuing his development.

I liked his game in game 1. Reporters were calling him the camp stand out as well. He’s certainly making a push for it.

I have no issue with Zac jones making it finally but his size always worries me. If Mancini wins the spot I have no issue with him getting it over jones.

This is what I had to say about him back in June:

I never checked in here because I tend not to post much during playoffs for superstitious reasons. I caught a few of the games during the Pack playoff run, and while it was mostly a pretty ugly experience to watch, there were some bright spots.

Some of the most impressive players for the Pack were their new college additions in Mancini and Chmelar.

Mancini ended up playing top pairing (+ 2nd PP/PK) next to Scanlin down the stretch and was an incredibly steady presence. He became my favorite player to look out for because he always seemed to be making smart stick plays. He saved a few goals with smart body positioning and well-timed stick lifts or tie-ups. He's a strong skater for his size and would probably be the third-best skater on the current Rangers D corps. They showered him with opportunities during this run. I think we see him as a Ranger sometime within the next two years.

As Pete mentioned, despite how advanced his game is, I think he's best served staying in Hartford. He'll get an opportunity to play top pair, top PP, and top PK on a Hartford team that should be playoff-bound again. His offensive abilities are a bit of a revelation. and he'll have more of an opportunity to let that side of his game blossom by being the number one guy in Hartford. There's not a single strong puck mover in Hartford, but that could be Mancini. This is a guy who should be built up to replace Trouba in the not-so-distant future.

First off, the guy was eye-opening impressive in the first game. He was confident, he was poised, he looked like he belonged, and he even chipped in offensively. He looks close to ready.

But....where? If we had traded Trouba, we would be penciling him in for the RD3 spot. But, he's behind Fox, he's behind Trouba, he's behind Schneider, and (forgive me, hockey gods) he's behind Ruhwedel. So, I'd agree on the consensus. Let him grow in the AHL. Give him a cup of coffee or two when the inevitable injury bug hits. And when we have this conversation next year, it's about how well he gels with Jones or whatever LD3 we've brought in

He looked good in the first preseason game.  Big guy that moves well and looked sound positionally.  He is a right handed shot though so I don’t him and Zac Jones competing for the same spot.  I see them as a viable third pair next year if/when Trouba is bought out.

Zac Jones is basically the same size as Tony DeAngelo.  He's a bit smaller than Adam Fox.

Is it that teams can't afford a second small offensive defenseman?

The defense outside of trouba and miller and Schneider is average to small. If he was the only guy I wouldn’t care but half the defense being on the smaller side worries me. Especially when you compound that with the fact that trouba and Schneider are really the only physical guys we have (I’m not counting Lindgren he doesn’t scare anyone and I feel like his physicality has softened recently)

I like what I saw from this kid right away.  I don't think there's any reason to rush him here, unless the injury bug rears it's ugly head, as G man pointed out.  We actually still have Ben Harpur as well as a depth guy, just in case things get ugly.

But this Mancini kid has a lot of good things going for him;  he has a nice shot, good size, and some really good mobility as a skater.

I think we're about a year away with him, but I really think he's going to be a good one for us!!!  That's a great score as a 5th round pick, I'm looking forward to see him again against the Isles tonight.

I like the idea of letting him get big minutes in Hartford, but I'm curious to see how he pans out over the next couple of pre-season games.  Who knows!
