There isn't a lot of news because the top 6 are 5-of-6 from last season and the young guys are the same as the young guys from last season. I think if Lavi is forward thinking he will make room for several of the young guys and use vets like Vesey, Carrick and Trouba to make that happen.

His forward thinking is thinking about the playoffs. This is not a team that's developing young players right now unless they outright beat a veteran, like somebody beating out Vesey, Brodzinski, or Kakko. They just signed Carrick for 3 years. He isn't going to sit for the imaginary center that the Rangers don't have who will take his spot. And rightfully so.
Br4d
Why would you give a 32 year old player who is definitively not a star player a spot over a 22 year old who might be? The Rangers haven't gotten to the promised land using the technique of dissing Hartford. They likely won't if they continue to pretend Hartford is just there to backfill injuries. Who is the 32-year-old and who is the 22-year-old? You can't ask an arbitrary question like that and not name names.
Br4d
The 32 year old is Sam Carrick. The 22 year old is any of the names we have become accustomed too over the last couple of seasons. If Carrick is *much* better than all those 22 year olds then you give him the spot even though you are paying a price down the road for doing so. If he's just a 4th liner why the hell are you road-blocking a bunch of guys in Hartford for a guy who maybe has a couple of mediocre years left? Phil
It literally doesn't matter. Carrick's salary is under the threshold to allow the team to waive and bury his entire contract with no penalty. If you don't think the Rangers would do that to a free agent signing, I'll remind you, they did literally this to Patrick Rissmiller.

If he's just a 4th liner why the hell are you road-blocking a bunch of guys in Hartford for a guy who maybe has a couple of mediocre years left? The answer is simple. Carrick is a center. None of the other players fighting for a spot are centers. Carrick is a 4th liner. None of the other players fighting for a spot project to be 4th liners. He isn't blocking anybody. If anything, it's Reilly Smith and Kakko who probably are. And frankly none of the kids have really shown they are head and shoulders better than the vets to warrant a spot on a team with Cup aspirations. Should the Rangers blow it and be nowhere near as good as last year, you'll probably see some guys waived/traded and youngsters brought up. But as of today, this is a total non-issue. 1

Especially when you consider the fact that most of these kids are waivers-exempt. If you have time, use it. If Carrick stinks, waive him and bury him. Ditto Vesey or any other veteran. Rissmiller literally signed a three-year deal, I think, and was waived and never returned before the calendar year turned over in year one. Drew a Penalty
The competition at forward is down to Othmann, Edstrom, Berard, Groulx, Brodzinski, and Carrick. Defense is down to just Mancini and Mackey. Korczak and Robertson are both still up but only because of injury. Edit: Robertson is evidently healthy so maybe they're giving him a final crack but I wouldn't expect anything. Give it a couple of years. You could be looking at and 3rd and 4th line like below to supersize your request: Edstrom(6'7")-Rooerbroeck(6'7")-Rempe(6'8") Aspinal(6'7")McConnel Barker(6'2")--Chemlar(6'5") Try and tell me that Drury is not a size queen. I wonder if Robertson is up because they think they're going to lose him on waivers and want to trade him. It feels decently clear that he isn't making this team. They might as well trade him if they can get anything for him.

Surely there's value in that seventh rounder the Sharks will reluctantly give us for him. Edited October 2 by Pete

Probably no value, but you never know. Better than Robertson blocking someone's development by playing top pairing and all situations at Hartford. And occasionally a 7th rounder becomes something (Lundqvist).
Ozzy
Anyone else not very impressed with Othmann, or is it just me? I'm just not feeling it with this kid yet. Is there something I'm missing here?

He hasn’t stood out and it’s not helping his case. he had a handful of good shifts but the consistency isn’t there. with that said he wasn’t exactly playing with Mika and panarin but never the less…
Drew a Penalty
Othmann needs to move his feet and be more assertive with his passes. He was throwing a lot of pucks into space, and you can't be making area passes or soft dumps in some of his situations. He has the right intention but the execution is off. He also hasn't used his shot much and has flubbed some opportunities he did have. He's not ready and that was expected, by me at least. Hopefully, he's not disgruntled when he goes down to Hartford and uses the opportunity to light the AHL on fire. 1 1 1
