That's dust brotha, the glitter wore off quickly.

You are right though. Any team could have him with an offer over 3-4 mil probably. Which is crazy but true.

I have mixed feelings about Lafreniere.  He definitely hasn't brought the superstar vibe at any point but his production has been solid given his age and experience.  If we'd picked him where we should have drafted, maybe 15 slots lower we'd be thrilled by his progress right now.

The opportunities we have provided have been ok but nothing like what a #1 overall usually receives.  I think we've been deficient in that regard and I'm a bit worried what would happen if he actually wound up on a bad team that was planning to lean on him instead of having him there on the periphery of the talent base.

I’ve been a big LaFreniere defender.

We are going to find out this year what the why is with him.

Right. As I said, he’s LTIR again or retiring and they’ll recoup that. And there are other ways to move out money in that roster as well.

My point was more on risking any 1st coming up.

And while the Montreal connection on LaFreniere is obvious, I was thinking more along the lines of Miller, who they’d surely have to go above 4.3 for.

Would they want to risk a 1st that could be a lottery pick is the question.

As far as I know, Price can't go on LTIR until the season starts.  So his cap won't come off until then.  Teams can go over the cap by a certain percentage during the offseason but have to be cap compliant by the start of the regular season.

We'll see where they slot him at the start of the year.

Laviolette has to realize at this point that waiting for Lafreniere to force your hand isn't going to work.  If the Rangers want the best chance for him to break out they need to give him that opportunity and stick with it through the first quarter or so.  If he's still kind of blah at that point then he becomes a chip at the trade deadline.

There comes a point when you have to take your best shot come what may.

I agree.

Obviously I’d like to see a greater effort in terms of conditioning. But I think the talent is there. Just needs the opportunity and minutes.

Yes.

That’s the case.

But there’s other ways for them to clear cap space if they want to.

I'd kind of hate to trade him for a rental from a non-contender, and contenders/buyers generally won't be giving up value to get a project for a playoff run.  He'd more likely go in an offseason deal, and for significantly less than he would fetch right now.

I don’t see a deadline move.

If it comes to that, which is in no way a foregone conclusion, it’s an off-season deal
