Greschner Reflects on Legendary Rangers Career Following Induction into Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame

Recommended Posts

Good read about Gresch…

It was announced recently that Rangers great Ron Greschner will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023. Ron’s well-deserved induction is due in large part to his 16-year NHL career, all of which was spent as a Ranger.

Greschner was a decent player.  His career was a bit overshadowed by the fact that he wasn't Brad Park.  Park's career was a bit overshadowed by the fact that he wasn't Bobby Orr.  Barry Becks' career was overshadowed by the fact that he wasn't Barry Beck.

And that's all I have to say on that.

Well, except "Shoot the puck Barry! Shoot the puck!"

He smashed with Carol Alt for a long time. Definitely a check in the positives column.

I’ll repeat the story quickly…my dad and I spent a dinner evening with Gilbert and Gresh at a table for 4 during a playoff viewing at Rusty Staub’s Restaurant. I was a young pup about 18-19 years old. Carol Alt joined us at the end of the night and I froze. She was soooooooo beautiful I was literally speechless. And yes, the wood was firm!

She used to sit in the same seat, front row behind the net, every game, so you could see her dress and legs from the whole arena.  There was a line to get her autograph between periods, and frequent chants of Car-ol.  A friend of mine went to middle and high school with her (Wheatley HS, Roslyn, LI).  He says she was always pretty, but very tall, gangly and ackward until later.  Her father was a strict military guy, and Carol was in ROTC at Hofstra until spotted by a modeling scout when she was working as a waitress in a diner on Jericho Turnpike.

Got to love a not so handsome player pulling a 10

Greschner’s ability to carry the puck out of the defensive zone was instrumental in the Rangers defeating the Islanders in the 79 semifinals.
Always liked Gresch but man he might have been the sloooowest skater I’ve ever seen especially later in his career

She was right across the aisle from our seats and the autograph line was generally a pain in the ass for getting in and out to the can between periods - particularly when she would have Kim Alexis, who was married to Duguay for a while, sit with her. She was so thin that it always struck me that professional models were probably never allowed to eat anything.

Yeah. It was a slow train coming, for sure.

I have lasting memories of the very end for him in the '90 playoffs.  I would be holding my breath every time Randy Wood (who had speed and nothing else) came barreling down the ice and Gresch struggled to stop him.  He wasn't fast to begin with, and it was painful at the end.

My best memories of him are from his rookie year.  The once vaunted Ranger D had disintegrated, with Neilsen, Seiling and Rolfe having given way to Marotte, Beverly and Bednarski.  Greschner was the one bright spot on the blue line at that time.  There was hope! (until a certain goal 11 seconds into a playoff game...).

Never a real star, but, I agree, he was good in the early days. A 2-way D-man better than solid at both ends.

Ah, Captain Crunch. One of the long line of quasi-heavyweights of to come to MSG and cease to be all that tough - and have their career unwind and largely disintegrate to boot.

Ouch!  You triggered a sharp pain in my shoulder out of nowhere!

I dont' think longevity should earn you a jersey retirement without being a bona fide premier player.

Park was a first post season all star three times and second team twice with the Rangers.  I think that should get him his jersey retired, but I don't think Greschner should get it, largely for longevity.

Greschner was a decent player.  Very good pointman on the powerplay.  Good at even strength.  His defense was ok but nothing to write home about and he took a few too many penalties.

Dave Maloney was the glue on those defenses.  He was also the guy who would step up and fight when that needed doing.
