I find it hard to believe the Devils do this without some high degree of confidence they will re-sign Meier, and I find it hard to believe Meier re-signs at Jack Hughes' number or less if the rumor was true about them wanting Hughes to remain the highest paid Devil on the team for now. It will be interesting to see how the rest of this unfolds.

They're in a weird spot, because they're going to have 36M to work out like 13 roster spots next year. What's probably odder is that two of them are spoken for ELCs in Hughes and Nemec, so it's like....32M (performance bonuses) to work out 11 spots.

Meier and Bratt together might go 17M, and the rest? Who knows.

Explain this one, please.

Original reports seemed to be a first rounder and used puck bags, which would be less than the first, a second and Morgan Barron that we ended up paying for Copp.  Now some reports say a 2024 conditional as well, which would change calculus, although it would depend on what the condition is.

The conditions on the draft picks are as follows:

  • San Jose Receives New Jersey's 2023 First-Round Pick: If the pick is a top-two selection, New Jersey will instead transfer their own 2024 first-round pick.

  • San Jose Receives Conditional 2024 Second-Round Pick: Should New Jersey reach the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals (and Meier plays in at least 50% of Meier's Club's Playoff games in 2023) or the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals, New Jersey will transfer its own first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft to San Jose (top 10 protected), instead of its own second-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft. If New Jersey's first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft is a top 10 selection, New Jersey will have the option to instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft to San Jose. Should New Jersey transfer its first-round pick in 2024 NHL Draft per the original condition (top-two above in Condition A), New Jersey will instead transfer its own first-round pick in 2025 NHL Draft should they reach the 2024 Eastern Conference Finals.

It's all complicated, but the expected price for Meier was higher.  NJ has had so many high picks over the past five years, it hardly needs a late first rounder this year and another late first rounder next should they make it to the Eastern finals.

Sounds akin to another deal.....

One that involved the lightning.....

One where the Rangers got two firsts, Vlad Namestnikov, Libor Hajek and Brett Howden.........

That was for TWO PLAYERS!!

San Jose gunna lose this one....I've seen it before.....

It's not about "winning" it. You never win any trade in which you're giving up the best player. It's about getting back a package that doesn't leave every fan base, including yours, collectively shouting "WHO!??"

Maybe Mercer was never available, but it's insane the Sharks didn't get a single marketable name out of this.

I think three of those guys (Zetterlund, Mukhamadullin, Ohkotiuk) will be in the Sharks lineup in September. So...TBD there, but it's definitely a little too far in the mystery box range to fell amazing about it as a Sharks fan.

I just don't get how you let the Devils get away with future lottery protection, though. Of all teams that should have learned their lesson on this one, it's the Sharks. Doubly so because the Devils are in a very hard division that will be extremely competitive - a goalie issue or an injury will be enough to knock them to the bubble.

The additional Sharks players going to NJ have essentially no value, and the Devils players going to SJ don't have much more.  This is essentially Meier for a late first this year and a late first next year should the Devils make the conference finals either this year or next.  I think that's a great deal for the Devils, especially considering that the Devils were one of the the teams Meier was rumored to want to go to and there is a very high probability they will sign him.

The Rangers-Tampa trade was worse, as the Rangers gave up two good players with term.  That trade does serve as a sneak preview to SJ as to what you are likely to get with a one or two late first round picks.

Too bad. This guy's been garbage and a complete dead weight on the org's cap since he signed the contract. This year is not only an anomaly, but despite all of those points he's hovering around even +/- and actually a -2, while having been a minus player for nearly his entire stint there. I don't put much weight on +/- typically, in a vacuum anyway, but when a guy has 58 ES points in 60 games, it kind of says something that he's gotten scored on more than that.

Karlsson totally getting traded now.

If they can move Karlsson, he's gone. That contract is the single biggest issue they've got and this season is an absolute gift to them because he's playing at a level that justifies that deal. The iron has literally never been hotter to get it done.

The timing on this for the Sharks is just awful, but moving Karlsson changes the calculus big time. Right now, they have six players signed to 2026 - Vlasic, Couture, Hertl (actually 2030), Karlsson (actually 2027), Mario Ferraro, and Matt Benning. Benning's contract is trivial, Ferraro's is fair but ill timed. The rest? Yikes.

IMO, they blow the whole goddamn thing up if they can move Karlsson - and it'd be a huge thing for them. Their strategy has to be something like this:

  1. If they can move Karlsson, they have to do it and ask no questions. Even if they have to hold 3m a year - that won't matter much for the Sharks (it's around 12m over 4 years, so not nothing), but it'll make someone will pay through the teeth.
  2. They can and should buy out Vlasic next off-season. That buyout doesn't matter or hurt that much, and the biggest chunk of cap will be freed up as they flip to contention.
  3. They can and should approach Hertl about a trade - just be honest with him that this is a rebuild and by the time we're done, you're going to be 34. Do you really want this? That market will be absolutely nuts - he's a bona-fide top 6 center with a pretty fair contract for what he brings.
  4. Couture's the wildcard. He's the captain. He's about to turn 34. He's clearly not the two-way player he used to be, but he's still productive. He has near full trade approval - he needs to submit three teams he'd accept a trade to. And he's got a cap hit of 8m a year until 2027. His contract is relatively buyout friendly as well.

Grier's got his work cut out for him.
