It's Past Time - Take Kreider Off PP1

Nice pass to Mika last night there, Chris! But it's time to get off PP1.

I randomly decided to look it up today, but Kreider has 0, yes ZERO, powerplay goals since November 13 (!!!!!!!!!). He has 4 assists in that span, including the 1 last night. That's 100 minutes of powerplay time without a goal and just 4 assists. Mind you, this is a guy who scored 26 (exactly half) of his 52 goals last season on the PP. That's not enough of a contribution on the man advantage. The Rangers' PP struggles are well documented this season, and Kreider's poor performance is certainly a top reason why.

Some of it is bad luck, sure. Last night we saw him deflect a puck off his stick and block it with his own leg - last year, that probably goes in. But it goes beyond that. Something isn't working - whether it's the way Trocheck plays the bumper, constantly deferring to Mika's shot, Panarin doing the stanky leg too much... you could speculate all day.

It just isn't working anymore. It's not you, Chris, it's me.

Let's change up the structure a bit, and get someone else out there - not to replace Kreider at the net front, but to adjust the strategy. It's past time.

Kreider has been quite useless all season long. How this is the same player from last season I have no idea.

with that said- I think the biggest change has been trochek on PP 1. Him and Kreider are redundant players and it’s clearly bumped Kreider to the side, completely it seems. I’d leave him on pp1 and have have trochek anchor pp2.

Yeah, that's an option too. Or move Trocheck to net front and bring Kakko/Chytil up in the bumper.

Eitherway, something has to change. Kreider just isn't providing enough of an impact as a net front presence when he's not actually producing! When the PP struggles, at least guys like Fox, Panarin, Zib are trying to drive play. Kreider is very much a passenger.

Whether or not he’s ready that minimum salary contract will be hard to resist.

changes are a comin one way or another

Oh yeah.... I think we're set up to be a formidable powerhouse if we can just get a few contracts outta the way!  CK's comes to mind...

This. The power play has been quite effective for two seasons until you swapped number 16s.

I would give any member of the kid line a shot on PP one and move Tro off.

Kreider has missed a couple of deflection goals, but this feels like a bit of misplaced blame because overall there's been a lack of rebound/deflection opportunity on the PP. The real problem is a combination of forcefeeding Zibanejad as the only real shooting threat on the PP, and Panarin being a pumpkin now in the spot he's playing. Panarin has 1 PP goal since October 23, and the lone goal was on December 22 where he happened to be in Zibanejad's spot on the PP. He has the puck on his stick all of the time and he plays a premier position on the PP, yet he is as close to a non-threat as you get right now. Last year he was 6th in PP points. This year he is 30th. He's not finding lanes he used to find. Old thick neck sniffle face behind the bench just doesn't have the stones to make the drastic move that's really required. Back before Zibanejad manned the spot he does now, and Panarin was there instead, it was the same silly stuff with Strome on the right boards in Panarin's current spot instead. Just another guy who posed no shooting threat on that side of the ice.

The league has generally caught up to Zibanejad's one timer. He has still gotten his PP goals, but I would argue that's from pure dumb luck volume of trying the same thing rather than it being any kind of effective approach. The rest of the PP is dead and much worse than it should be.

The power play is:

1. Feed Mika for the one timer

Repeat that 100 times..

actively trying to get puck on net for purposeful deflections seems to have died.. Maybe that’s Strome, but I think the love affair with the Mika Clapper is a problem
