Isles Acquire Bo Horvat From Canucks for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty and 2023 1st Round Pick; Re-Sign to 8-Year/$68M Extension; $8.5M AAV

This makes no sense to me. Islanders are not even in a playoff spot right now and based on Horvat's "no contract talks til the end of the season" thing he has with his agent, I have a feeling there's no commitment from him to extend with the Isles.

That is a risky, risky move by the Islanders in dealing Raty, who I know Islander fans were very hopeful for, and a 1st this year. I read that it was a protected 1st; have to see the details there.

It shows Lou still has a pulse. If Horvat can help squeak them in, they could be a problem for teams. But if not, this could be a big swing and a miss.

Some teams just go for it. The guy certainly fits a gaping hole in that lineup.

I'm guessing this is piece #1 going in what will be a fire sale for Vancouver.  Isles don't really give up much for a really good 2 way center.

I wouldn't say it's not much, it would be like Rangers trading Gauthier, Othmann, and a 1st. For a rental with no guarantee of extension and my team isn't even in a playoff spot I'm not doing that. And I also imagine they'll be overpaying by a lot if they do get him to stay there after this season.

Really happy to see Beauvillier gone as far away as possible for the same reasons @Blue Heaven noted.

On paper, this is a good trade for both teams, but it's extra risky for the Isles, who are currently two points back of the Pens for the final wild card in the East. Pens have three games in hand on them, too.

Really rooting for them to miss hard, now.

I think it's a pretty good trade for the Islanders.  Beauvillier is worth little given that he hasn't panned out to date and is over paid ($4.125m) for what he is.  I've heard the Islanders (and not much of anyone else) talk up Raty, but it has always seemed a least partly a function that with their barren cupboard, they have little else to talk up.

Horvat's going to have Lou right where he wants him.  Usually, this kind of price for a rental is paid by a team with serious Cup aspirations, not a team in a five way battle for one of two wild card spots.

After Lou pays this guy $9m per, in addition to the $9m for Barzal, and the additional contracts of Lee, Nelson, Pulluch, Pelech, and Palmieri, I'd like to see how he re-signs Sorokin for a big raise when his contract is up next year.

I think Othmann is probably a better prospect than Raty. No?

The Isles farm system has kinda faltered after they struck gold in the 1st round of 2018.  I don't know how much credence can be given to the Athletic, but they rank the Isles farm system at 27th.

Beauvilier has a career high of 39 points. Gauthier has a career high of 9.

This is more like a tier under Chytil/Kakko/Laff, plus a tier under Othmann, and a 1st.

IBuffalo's a point up on them with three in hand. The Panthers are a point back. And while I think both teams are cooked, Detroit and Ottawa are keeping pace w/the Isles.

Not a good team. And their February starts off a little soft, but the last 7 games in the month are Pit, Bos, Pit, WPG, LA, WPG, MIN.

Like...you're telling me the Islanders are getting 11 points from that run to stay remotely relevant? Color me skeptical.

While I doubt horvat gets moved again at the TDL if the islanders continue to not get there, I think making the move now with that option is about the best way to mitigate this wonderfully high risk move.

Look, you gotta love GMs swinging for it. Makes it exciting rather than just having third liners shipped around, and the plus side here is we get to watch the isles implode if it doesn't work out.
