Good deal. I’m somewhat surprised he’d sign that, but he must have been adequately scared about not getting any offers at all this past summer. Lock it in now vs possibly risk having to go play overseas. I do think if he finishes this season how he has started, he’d have gotten something closer to what Rooney or Motte got.

Some players just want security after having moved around a lot.

Great city, close to family, etc.

He was, though. He literally said something about the fear of needing to sign overseas.

Quote

“I don’t think it’s in my personality for me to approach them about another deal, but it would be great to have something in place,” said the 29-year-old, who has gone through the last two summers soliciting tryout offers, first getting one from the Devils.

“Pardon my cursing, but it was so [effing] stressful day after day waiting for an update on where I stood. It got to the point where I thought about looking at my options overseas.

“But I’m not going to focus on contract stuff. If it happens, it happens. But I think I’ve played well enough that I wouldn’t have to be in that same situation next summer.”

Yeah, and I mean it’s not like he hasn’t banked some money. His signed contracts have totaled $16 million now, so he should still have millions in the bank. Taking security in exchange for possibly missing out on an extra $500-750k over the course of the next two years is a reasonable decision.

Yup. I saw that. I wasn’t sure how much that would impact his decision to take less. Turns out it impacted it quite a lot.

Yup. Good for both sides, though. He gets some security. Team gets a quality, reliable bottom-six player. Just good business all around.

Dude just seems like a total introvert and isn't looking for an adventure.

Yeah, I don't know it for a fact, I just know it's true. Dude eats plain bagels, presumably without butter or cream cheese, as a go-to meal. Doesn't get more introverted than that.

IDK if this guy was the victim of high expectations coming out of college but he's really carved out a nice NHL career for himself. Assuming he plays this whole contract out with the Rangers he'll just need a 1 year deal somewhere to make it 10 years in the show without playing in the AHL. Pretty wild when you think about it.

Like the signing a lot. If he regresses badly, its easy to send him to waive/trade him. If he remains relatively consistent, great cheap depth option. He's not the guy whose gonna make a huge deal about being a scratch either.

He likes it here. That’s why.

While last offseason didn’t go well for him, he was at this point looking at more than that elsewhere. But I think he liked it here to start, underperformed as a young player whilst growing into himself, and bounced around to places he didn’t really want to be and grew.

This is a good signing. A cheap rate on a dependable player who can contribute in multiple facets.

Perfect.

Hes become the EXACT kind of player you want for the bottom-6.

Good size.

Defensively responsible.

Offensive upside.

Plays multiple positions.

Moves up and down and back again.

Kills penalties.

Can play on the power play.

Above average skater.

At worst he gives you even hockey.

If he was a true C and not a winger, they’d be paying double.

He’s also a player that you look at and see moments in.

Like he can come out of nowhere and score a couple and win you a game.

Or he just grabs a puck and makes a play out of place.

Point being, it wouldn’t surprise me if he has a huge goal or two or a hot postseason run in him.
