QUOTE(S) TO NOTE:

“Regardless of how many changes you’ve had since the beginning of the year, you’re always trying to build chemistry and get a feel for your linemates, who sometimes it takes years. Some lines who stay together for a long time and it becomes kind of second nature. Keep building. For us, it’s just the comfortability with [Kakko] because you know he’s going to make the right play, you know he’s going to support the puck, hold on to the puck. He’s obviously a very good goal-scorer, but his ability to see the ice is pretty special, too. Some of the plays he’s been making, going back to the playoffs.”

— Chris Kreider on Kakko's presence on the top line

Sorry but no coach is letting a line that's not working sit together for years

That's not to absolve GG from his panicked tinkering, but Kreider is out over his skis there.

Of course not.

In general though, allowing lines to build up some chemistry feels sensible.

A start would be not to jumble the lines at the first hint of trouble. In particular when the team is on a roll, the lines in general are working and make sense for the first time this season.

But then again, we know the only tool in GG’s bag is pressing “scramble” in his line generator app.

I agree with all this, I just disagree with CK's comment about chemistry taking years to develop. That's just silly.

Nothing silly about it. Chemistry between players can absolutely take years to develop. Maybe it doesn’t take that long to develop a baseline of “competence”, but to develop into something more special can take a good long while. That’s in a lot of sports, not just hockey. Basketball, football, etc.

Nah. You can't even keep teams together for years, let alone lines. The lines who stay together for years do so because they have chemistry, they don't have chemistry because thru happenstance they were together for years.

I can't think of a line that has stayed together for more than 2 years. Can anyone point to more than 1 or 2 combinations that are playing together for more than 2 years?

It kinda doesn't happen anymore.
