Phil
Quote According to multiple sources, the Lightning are working with Ryan McDonagh to see if there’s another team he’d consider a trade to. It’s a very, very hard thing for Tampa to think about. McDonagh’s still a tremendous player (he was on the ice for the last shift to preserve the team’s Game 5 victory in Denver that prolonged the Stanley Cup Final) and is hugely popular among his teammates, who were disappointed to hear of the possibility. It’s not what Tampa wants to do, but may have to do. McDonagh has four seasons remaining on a cap hit of $6.75M, with a full no-trade clause. So he controls his destiny. We will see where it goes, but there are conversations about the future. https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/tampa-bay-lightning-working-with-ryan-mcdonagh-to-find-trade-fit/

Pete
I've seen him say he wanted to retire in TB, so this must be really crushing for him. I don't know who they have coming to replace him, he's an interesting choice of players to try and move.

Sod16
NYR and Wild are probably about the only places to which he'd be willing to go, and neither is a possibility. He'd be a tremendous final piece for about a half dozen teams, none of whom can take his contract.

Phil
Detroit feels likely here. They have Staal and DeKeyser on the left side, both veterans, expiring. Neither likely to return. Juolevi and Wallman are both RFAs. The only LD they have under contract (for one more year) is Oesterle. Oh, and then there's the fact that Yzerman is the same GM who acquired McDonagh from New York in the first place. Oh, and McDonagh is from Saint Paul and went to Wisconsin, so going to Detroit would put him really close to home. 1

Like, they are, but they aren't. Reminds me of the Rangers still "rebuilding" while they brought in Goodrow and others. Yzerman has said they'll continue to "rebuild," but he's expected to go big-game hunting this summer. They're linked to Copp and Trocheck, there's talk they'll trade Hronek because of the breakout of Seider (who took his PP time), and a lot of the trash UFA players they had filling bridge roles are expiring (Staal, DeKeyser, Gagner, Greiss, Hellberg, etc). Sod16
If McDonaugh had been willing to sign without a NTC, he probably could have gotten more money. In a sense, he paid for that protection and they are asking him to give it up for free. He also will take a pay cut going to an income tax state. I would politely say pound sand if I were him and I'm sorry if it means you can't sign Palat. Detroit looked bad the second half and narrowly missed the playoffs... by 26 points. I'd say that's still in a rebuild or at least not likely to contend for the next few years. 650 miles from the Twin Cities is not a big attraction. One day he's destined for the Wild after getting bought out of the last year or two. Went to HS two miles from Xcel Energy Center and wife is HS sweetheart. Don't know if LA has any cap left Fiala contract. At least on the upswing.

List of NHL teams that play in states with no income tax: Florida Panthers Vegas Golden Knights Seattle Kraken Nashville Predators Given that TB’s primary objective is to dump cap without taking it back, the only one on this list that works is Seattle. No chance McDonagh waives for there. So yeah, they are asking him to take a paycut. I agree with you. If I were McD, I’d tell them to pound sand. Phil
When the Rangers do this same thing to Trouba in '24, they're gonna get raked over the fuckin' coals to do it and have to give up multiple futures to whoever says yes.

BrooksBurner
Nashville already had Josi and Ekholm on the left. What in the world are they thinking tying up that kind of cap for 4 more years on a 33 y.o. LD going on the backend of his career?

I think it's more like Tampa Bay plays checkers because the league allows it, where the rest of the teams have to play 4D chess to manage their cap.
