Rangers Likely to Trade or Buy Out Patrik Nemeth

Look for him to try to offload defenseman Patrik Nemeth, who turned into a healthy scratch in the playoffs and has two years remaining at $2.5 million per season. The Rangers would likely have to attach an asset to the 30-year-old to convince another team to take him, with the other alternative being a buyout. That would save $1.5 million next season and leave them with a cap hit of $1 million. There would actually be no cap penalty for the 2023-24 season, then $1 million each year for 2024-25 and 2025-26, according to CapFriendly.

I think they pretty much have to do this given their cap situation, and I'm not against trading an asset to get cap space.

Also, I think Schneider is ready and Jones is almost ready, so the need for a veteran sixth is less acute (also, Miller has progresses, so D1 - D4 is solid).

Said it in another thread, but I'll say it again because it makes sense to have a more dedicated conversation about Nemeth:

1. He sucks for what he was supposed to be for the Rangers.

2. He doesn't suck so much they will have a lot of trouble moving him. He's a well-liked veteran with an affordable cap hit and term ($2.5 x 2 remaining). The key is going to be figuring out which teams they can talk deal with given his 8-team no-trade protection. If conventional logic holds true, that 8-team is all of Canada (because that always seems to be the case) plus one — the one, presumably, being Arizona.

Assuming this is the case, that still leaves quite a few lottery clubs with loads of cap room and reason to play ball. Buffalo, Anaheim, Nashville, Seattle. Hell, maybe the Avs would even take him if Johnson, Murray, and Manson all walk.

Would a team like Buffalo, who needs help getting to the cap floor, be interested? I'm sure they'd love to get a pick to make it happen.

Absolutely, presuming they're not on his list. I know we all hate him, but this isn't one of those deals that's impossible to make. He's actually easily traded. They add some mild sweetener, take back a mid-round pick or B-level prospect to fill a hole for a year or two, and call it a day.

I would look at someone like Jan Rutta from Tampa to fill the 6th/7th dman next season.

Plays both sides and comes with experience and costs around 1.5M.

I wouldn't. I'd just keep Braun. Rutta is awful.

Depends on how much Braun wants.   He's coming off a 1.8M cap hit.  If he wants that or more I look for a cheaper 7th dman so I can spend money elsewhere.  Drury has to cut corners where he can if he wants to improve the team.

Braun is 35. He's getting a one-year deal. Maybe two. Probably for the same amount Giordano just signed for with the Leafs. $800K per.

Braun grew on me but he’s gotta be #7 behind jones or lundqvist next season.

No, he doesn't. Because neither of those guys are all that good, either. But they can come in and compete, no problem. A would-be Braun extension would be to be a 6/7 anyway.

I’d argue jones looked better than nemeth with his limited time but it’s not important. other than that I don’t think we’re of different opinion here. Kids have to earn the spots one way or another because you’re not putting jones and lunkvist both out there.

9. Patrik Nemeth
Left Defense, New York Rangers
Age: 30
Contract: 2 more seasons, $2.5 million AAV
Buyout Cap Charges: $1 mil (2022-23), $0 (2023-24), $1 mil (2024-25), $1 mil (2025-26)

Scoop: Nemeth clearly did not garner the trust of coach Gerard Gallant in the playoffs. He appeared in the first four games of Round 1 against the Penguins, then didn’t skate a single shift in Game 5 until the Rangers iced a two-goal lead with 16 seconds left. Nemeth was a healthy scratch in the final 15 consecutive games to end the Rangers’ postseason. A buyout provides an immediate $1.5 million in cap savings next year.

I’d give Nemeth a few weeks next season to see where he’s at. He went through a ton of personal shit this season, and he’s better than this.

but that also gives a few of the kids to battle it out in the AHL to come up and take that 6th spot.

Drury’s biggest free-agent swing last summer was a massive whiff. Nemeth had an emotional first year with the Rangers, dealing with personal issues that kept him away from the team for a couple of stretches, and he never filled the defensive stalwart/PK specialist role Drury and Gerard Gallant wanted for him. Nemeth was in street clothes for the final 16 playoff games. If Drury can find a taker, Nemeth will be wearing a different uniform next fall.

I hate buyouts with a passion.  This was a rough year for Nemeth, but with cap space at a premium, it may not afford him another chance this season to try and increase his value here.

It's like the movie Casino....seems like we're always looking to bury someone in the desert (Arizona)!!  LOL
