3. So can I be the only one to wonder whether the Canucks will make a serious offseason run at acquiring Lafreniere now that they have hired his (former) agent, Emilie Castonguay, as assistant GM?

Lafreniere is going to have to move to the right wing in order to get top six minutes in New York. If there is doubt that he can handle the move, the Rangers are going to have to consider their options. (Even now, with a temporary right-side vacancy on the Zibanejad-Kreider Connection, head coach Gerard Gallant is opting to fill the void with Julien Gauthier rather than No. 13.)

And yes, you think about an Elias Pettersson or a Bo Horvat coming back in a mega-deal to fill that spot in the middle behind Zibanejad. But Pettersson is carrying an unaffordable cap hit of $7.35 million and though Horvat’s $5.5 million AAV hits the sweet spot, he only has one more year on his deal.

Still, I would be surprised if Vancouver does not make an inquiry.

I’d be in if miller is included but it will need to be quite a bit more as well. Which is fine, I’m not opposed to trading one of kakko or laf if it brings the right things back. But that’s an if - they’re not on the block

#1. Absolutely no one on the roster should be untouchable

#2. Even though he's not been great, I'd want a metric fuckton for ALF

#3. There is a legitimate hockey deal to be made with Vancouver if the parties really want it.

Petterson or nothing.

VAN would have to give much more than Horvat if Lafreniere is going back.

Problem is, Pettersson's contract makes him wholly unrealistic. Certainly in any kind of one-for-one swap. Even as a straight replacement for Strome — you're talking about adding a player in at $7.35M for the next two years.

I think it's entirely reasonable to talk about a potential trade, but VAN feels like a complete misfit.

Losing Laf and Strome gives you Petterson's salary.

I support not sending Alf out, though.

It doesn't. LOAF is at $925, presumably with a ton of bonuses he's not likely to hit.

Despite the doom and gloom on this board, ALF's ceiling is still incredibly high.

No player is untradeable. If Gretzky can get traded so can Lafrenierre. With that said, the cost-control + potential ceiling is still too valuable and I don't see the Rangers trading him for anything less than something insanity.

They can ask, but short of handing us the 1c of the future...I don't really care to move Laf.

He's been frustrating. He's not been frustrating enough to consider moving for anything short of a true haul.

I think we'd need to add to that.

I think if we throw in McKegg it gets it across the line

Let's keep McKegg and throw in Hajek!!!!

By the same logic, half the league is going to Montreal because their agent is the GM.

Makes no sense. The more likely scenario is that Lafreniere has to get a new agent.

Lafreniere is going no where. He’s 20. Yes, he hasn’t come in and lit the world on fire. Yes, there is still a ton of growing for him to do as far as his game goes. But this franchise isn’t about to give up on a #1OA pick 1.5 years into his development just for shits and giggles.

I get what you're saying and this thread took a turn towards McNasty as the target and I don't care who goes the other way in a trade for the best player in the league in his prime.

No, not give up on, but the club is absolutely stacked at left wing, with two players with significant trade control past the window in which they're going to need to offer Lafreniere a second deal. It's maybe an example in the extreme, because he was hammered by injuries, but Nolan Patrick was "given up on" at that point, too. Not for exactly the same reasons, but it's proof that draft position only buys you so much room.
