Rangers Believed to Be Inquiring About Defensive Help on Trade Market

With Patrik Nemeth sidelined by what the team is calling a “non-COVID issue,” Gallant and the coaching staff got to see Hajek fill that defensive lefty role. He got some of Nemeth’s PK time Sunday, too, with Ryan Lindgren still out, though that disappeared Monday with Lindgren back. But these are important moments for the Rangers since Nemeth just hasn’t been the answer in a defensive depth role and they may want to find out if there are answers on the roster before looking elsewhere.

A league source said Monday the Rangers are already believed to be inquiring about defensive help on the trade market, so perhaps Chris Drury has decided he needs to look elsewhere. But Hajek has proven he can handle that spot, so perhaps Gallant will be more willing to use him if there’s no imminent trade and Nemeth isn’t up to the minutes.

I have to ask this because it's a thing. Context suggests it's a dumb question but whatever - does "defensive help" explicitly mean a defenseman, or are we also talking about adding another Goodrow-like guy?

Defensive help doesn't really make sense so I guess my question is: does Arthur Staple know anything?

Sure it does. You can't take Jones-Lundkvist into the playoffs. Nemeth stinks. Hajek isn't good. Tinordi is not an NHL player.

You pick one of Jones or Lundkvist, trade the other for a reliable veteran partner, and off you go.

I don’t get this at all. If you want a defensive guy just call up Schneider who looked fantastic in preseason.

That was preseason, and I don't think you want that many rookies heading into the playoffs.

Really hard to have an all rookie 3rd pair.

Could they be saying the Rangers are looking for defensive help just because the Rangers are trying to unload Nemeth already?

I think the Hajek/Jones pairing looked really good against Edmonton and deserves a bunch more looks. I'm fine with going into the playoffs with that third pair if they play good until the deadline.  If not find another Nick Holden.

You have to make the best of the years some of these guys are having. You can't just say "wait until next year". Next year may bring more injury, for ex you may get 25g Kreider and not 40g Kreider, etc.

That said, there's like 7 weeks between now and the trade deadline. A lot can change to impact who/what we go after.

Really too early to have this conversation.

I'm not sure who you're getting for a 3rd pair who's any better. I think Nemeth has been very solid.

Tinordi does stink. Hajek has been fine. Lundqvist and Jones are the same (both NHL players IMO). So, again, we're talking about upgrading Nemeth, who just signed for 3 years. I don't see it happening.

And again, who's an available, affordable, 3rd pair dman?

I mean I guess but I rather just see them develop the talent they have I guess.

but that stems from my theory that this team Is still a good 1 - 3 years from seriously competing. (I know I know, we won’t truly know until The playoffs)

There were rumors around Expansion Draft time where they were interested in Giordano. Maybe they revisit that?

Not gonna lie, when I first saw this post, he was the first person I thought of.

Sure, but we're talking about 30ish games? Not a blocker like Minuth.

He's developing in Hartford. Doing well, too.

Lindgren back, fox looking unslumped, trouba train, Miller playing well...

This is when you try guys like Jones, Robertson and Schneider.

These kids have pedigree when it comes to performing, so if they can do it for a half a season, I'm confident with them in the playoffs.

I think 1LD and 2LD are bigger worries than the third pair, comes post season.

Lindgren doesn't concern me at all in the playoffs. He was built for it.

No way they roll an all rookie 3rd pair in the post. Not with Miller on the 2nd.

Lindgrens defense and health scares me. Love the kid, but he's not a first pair guy. His inconsistent play is overlooked because of his heart. That can go either way in the playoffs.

I think I look at Lindgren from an HR standpoint. Risk vs reward. And that cat is fucking risky.

We can agree to disagree, I don't have any issues with his defense whatsoever.

I feel like Lindgren has been kinda "off", so far this season.  In just one game back though, he looked "on" again.

Guys a gamer and I agree that he's built for the playoffs. He's the big game type. He's the guy that's going to make the big play and surprise the fuck out of people offensively aside from his physical presence.

But I do agree with you about using the prospects on the 3rd pair. They have to figure out who they want to keep. I can't see any of them being any worse than Nemeth. I'd like to see the options now while they are winning and can afford some growing pains. If it doesn’t look like any of them are solid enough,  they can make a move.

No matter what though, they should be shopping Nemeth right this second.  Get his contract out of here. Someone desperate will take him.

If they really are looking, it would probably be for a Nemeth-type guy.  What does that say about whatever is up with Nemeth?

Sounds like he’s out for the year or most of it anyway.

That he's suffering from season ending suckage.

I'm sensing a Reunanen sighting soon....

I'm not sure he's even on the taxi squad, I think he's a longshot.
