Yet, somehow, they came away from their table thinking "well, we need D pretty bad, so yeah, Alzner has a career-high of 23 points (scored in a contract year before UFA) and is a negative career possession player, but five years is fine." If Staal can maintain his current level he's going to be worth something in his walk year. Somebody like the Leafs is just dying for a guy like Staal.
