CBrowningPI
Fair enough. I love physical hockey, for the record. I just don't buy that hitting, specifically, has been the missing ingredient. That, to me, was what your post appeared to be suggesting. Sent from my iPhone using Blueshirts Brotherhood mobile app powered by TapatalkOk, just one more. Ozzy
Point is, I feel this team needs a whole new face....a whole new attitude and feel. The past is now the past and yes, they played like pansies on a lot of occasions, even before our last coach...even under Torts, who probably broke a blood vessel in his head coaching "those" type players that don't play physically. I simply feel that hockey being the contact sport it is, a player is much better playing with a physical edge to his game; even the scorers. I can't help but look back at the 2015 Final against the Kings. They absolutely out hit and outplayed the Rangers much of the series, and I feel they had a superior advantage simply because of their physical play. I don't mean dirty play fellas, I mean hard, clean hits within the rules, or as the announcers put it "finishing your checks"...ALL OF THEM! Checking = garlic Sent from my SM-N900T using Blueshirts Brotherhood mobile app powered by Tapatalk AV was begging the team to be physical that series. They put Glass in the lineup, they kept attacking Karlsson. I remember Valiquette talking about "push offs", that AV and the coaches were trying to make Karlsson "push off" the boards or players every change possible, in an effort to wear him down. Finishing your checks...implies going into a 'check' in the first place. We simply didn't appear to do that enough -- just my eye test. I agree with OZZY that hockey is a contact sport. A team approach to hitting, at least being physically involved, can be an intimidating factor in compiling W's v. L's. How would you like to be the opposition getting ready for a game knowing that the team in the other dressing is going to hit you -- all of you! Getting into the heads of the opposition matters. Funny aside story: In HS, we had a visiting team arrive on our field just prior to pre-game warm-ups. Our team was in our end zone doing stretches when their bus pulled in. For a moment, nothing happened, but then the door opened and this blood curdling scream emerged from their bus as they poured out like fire ants! They all lined up and began doing jumping jacks in unison, all the while screaming at us in some kind of chant. We got scared shitless and they beat the hoy crap out of us. Yeah, I was one of those pussies too -- LOL!

Aside from Game 3, which was total domination by the Kings, every other game could have gone the other direction. There is no telling what would have happened if goalie interference was properly called in Game 2 and the Rangers went on to take that one to tie the series. I feel Torts kinda had a similar mentality as far as fighting, and playing aggressive. He had a bunch of lunch pail players that could hit and play physical, but more often than not, they didn't. Instead they turned the other cheek and picked their ass up off the ice, trying to be the better man... Shanahan, Callahan, Avery, Fedotenko, Girardi, Dubinsky, Kreider, McD, Prust, Rupp, Sauer, Ashem, Haley, Voros, Boogard, Weise, Shelley, and a couple others. Why weren't those teams tough to play against? Why weren't they playing a physical game? All those guys turned into pussies? Toronto s hardly ever used tough guys. He'd rather have a deep team with special teams guys on the 4th line. I don't know man. Not sure every player that was brought in to be physical just decided "OUT OF THE FUCKIN BLUUUUUUUUUUUE (to rip... us...off!!!!) to just play wimpy or change their entire make up and reputation as a player.... The rangers team under torts led the league in fights I believe. The 2012 team was the toughest ranger team to play against that I can remember in my opinion. They played so hard that a narrative of they were worn out was born by an assclown media who resented torts and picked up by large group of the fan base. Obviously that was the beginning of the end of torts as he was gone following the next season. But for a short couple of years the rangers played the toughest hockey they ever played that I can remember. (1984 or so).

4EverRangerFrank
Under Torts we were shot-blockers. I guess my memory fails me as to the toughness part. Maybe it's just that last year's team was sooooooooo soft that my entire memory of physical hockey is jaded or lost. They can fix that for me this year by playing with an edge. Fatfrancesa
Best numbers I could find regarding 2012. There were 510 total fights in the nhl. The rangers led the league with 63. The rangers had over 2400 hits with 4 or 5 guys having over 200 each.
Fatfrancesa
I know Wayne Simmons has been brought up as a tough player. He wasn’t so much when Prust was rag dolling him.

They did lead the league in fighting majors that one year. Then got rid of Prust...... Prust gad 20 fights that season.. Rupp had 13, Bickel 12. Stu fucking Bickel. Prust had a contract year and Bickel was.. Bickel. Following year Asham lead the team with 6 fights.. I remember it the way you do Frank. They weren't exactly tough. Prust definitely made things interesting though. This team has a history of not being physical. No matter what, they seem to always get man handled. Even under Torts. Even when they lead the league in fighting majors, that one year thanks to Prust. They sure do give a good talking to players after a whistle and after their goalie gets run or interfered with. Fatfrancesa
In comparison to the rest of the nhl the rangers were tough under torts. Prust was a huge part of that but he was no fourth line goon.
Pete
For the years Torts was here, the Rangers led the league in hits by about 500. They were 6th on major penalties. 9th most wins. This also included time when guys like Dubi were traded for guys like Nash. 09-10 T-11th in NHL in major penalties 10-11 6th in NHL in major penalties 11-12 led NHL There's the way people want to remember it, and then there's the way it was. Extremely tough to play against, never turned away from a hit and made the opponent play a 200ft game. He's some clips of times, that, "not matter what" the Rangers "never responded" In fact, search youtube for hits on Lundqvist and you really only see one that didn't have a fight after it, the Eakin one. Phil
Those teams also climbed back into ANY game they were down in. A trait entirely lost under AV. Trailing 2-0 after two in 2011? Still in it. Significant chance they'd at least tie it up and take the game to OT. Trailing 2-0 in 2017? Game over. For the most part, I enjoyed the hockey AV employed over Torts. After Torts abandoned safe is death for death by blocking shots and standing 5 in front, it’s wasnt the most enjoyable hockey.
