Mike
I get a phone call while I was sleeping at 7:30 on Saturday morning. Woke me up out of a deep sleep. I look at the phone, it's a strange number, I answer it: There was a little more to it, but you'll get the point. Me: Hello X: Mike? Me: Yeah X: Is this Mike? Me: Yes, who the fuck is this? X: Your brother Anthony was in a car accident with my cousin. Me: Is he ok? X: Yes, but here's the situation ... He hit my cousin's BMW from behind while they were pulling out of a gas station. Your brother got out of the car, and went to call the police. My cousin told him not to call the police, and to just give him $900 for the deductible. Your brother said he didn't have 900, and said he'll go through insurance. My cousin is a fugitive, and refused to let him call the cops, so he pulled out a gun, and pistol whipped him, and took his phone. My cousin called me to come help. Your brother said you would help him, will you help him? Me: (weird mix of emotions. Not sure what's going on yet) Yes, but I don't have 900 on me though. Where are you? X: I can't tell you that. Are you going to help him? Me: I said yes. How am I supposed to bring you money? X: When you get it all, I'll let you know. Me: I wanna talk to my brother. X: He's in the car across the street with my cousin. I can't let you talk to him until I know you have all the money. How much do you have now? Me: (I'm getting dressed as I'm on the phone, my brother lives 4 blocks away. My wife gets up, I'm mouthing at her to call Anthony's phone) I have nothing. X: That's not good, Mike. I have calmed the situation, but my cousin will hurt him if he doesn't get the money. He's a fugitive, do not call the police, or it will not end well. Me: Well 1. if he hurts him, he won't get paid. 2. If he hurts him he better hide from me, and worry less about the police. X: Don't call the police, Mike. Are you going to help him? Me: What kind of car was my brother driving? X: Get the money together, I'll call you back in 10 minutes. (He hangs up) My wife is still trying to call my brother. I get in the car, drive to my brother's house, pull down the driveway, and see his car parked their, clean as a whistle. As I'm pulling out of the driveway, my wife calls me and says my brother answered the phone, and he was home sleeping.
Pete
This shit happened to my Grandmother. She pistol whipped a guy...Nah, just kidding. Seriously, they get your information form FaceBook. They told my Grandmother that her grandson (my brother) got locked up and she needed to wire money to get get him out. Thank god she had the sense to call me first, and I straightened the whole thing out. But seriously, don't even bother answering strange numbers. These people who do this don't leave voicemails. Just ignore calls and people saying strange shit like this. They are likely to call at weird hours and catch you off guard.

Here's what made it semi believable, my brother plays cards on Friday nights, and does come home at crazy hours. The game is in a questionable town, and I can 1000% believe he didn't have gas in his car, so it made half ass sense. Pete, I always answer the phone no matter what number it is because 1. I lost my contacts a few weeks ago. 2. It could be someone I need to talk to even if my contacts were in tact, but they called from a different number. I don't have voicemail. For all they know he's a homeless guy sleeping in his car. Just have to keep your head when this shit happens, don't link relationships for family on facebook, or store numbers in your phone under "Cuz" or "Bro" or "Mom". That's how they get you. Mike
That's not how they do it. He's listed as your brother on FB. That's how they get the lead. Is he? I don't think I ever accepted a family request outside of "married to: " Anyway, I let the cops know what happened. They came to take a report, and I told the cop that he kept using the word "fugutive". Who talks like that? Criminals would never use that terminology. The cop said yeah, that's shit you might here on tv. He told me it happened to his neighbor before it became popular. The neighbor walked over to his house, and he got on the phone making believe he was her other brother. They said they had their brother kidnapped and wanted $2000. They said he was buying drugs in xxxx. Everything the guy said made sense, as the sister was confirming everything they were saying could be true. He had them on the phone for 5 minutes until he figured out it was bullshit. Nuts.

This, or you are tagged in a photo with him. Always call the person before getting worried. There are alot of different versions of this scam. You should call the cops and make a report, and at least get them that number.
NYR2711
Another trick is to never put hou actual home address in your GPS. If someone ever stole it, they know hour not home and now know where you live. Use an address in your town thats not near your home, use a store address. Keirik
I cannot tell you how many reports I have taken for this kind of scam. It's always somewhere along the lines of "Your grandson got in trouble on vacation overseas. Please dont call his parents because he doesn't want them to get mad. It was a small possession of Marijuana charge. Moneygram or Western Union needed to send money. Please call x number back in a few minutes. When they do, person answers, acts like they are from the court and give all the information on where to wire the money. An hour later, call back to say how unfortunately the judge is giving a harder time and is asking for a steeper fine. Please send more. Rinse, wash, repeat, until the person finally says its enough, i want to speak to my grandson or they finally just call their own daughter or son to ask about the grandkid only to find out he or she is fine and at home. Very common scam and very easy to get info from anywhere on the internet. They dont target a specific person per say, but rather target large chunks of people where maybe 1 out of 10 fall for it and they try over 1,000 people. Once the money is wired, its untraceable and the phone calls, even if the caller ID shows local, is always from a google number or location out of the country.
