Smith getting shipped out to make space?

Awesome news. Can't wait to see what he's got.

I really don't understand NHL GM's hard-on for burning ELC time, for litteraly no reason. Gorton is particularly adept at not understanding, or caring.

I agree. Would starting him in the AHL save the year? And maybe calling him up for the final 9 games?

We have 14 games left. By the time he's through quarantine, we're down to 10. By the time he's got a few practices under his belt?

Wouldn't he just slide if he doesn't play 9 games?

Agree. They should take a page out of MLB's book on how to manipulate a young man in his first years to keep control longer.

The 9 game rule only applies to contracts with slide eligibility for 18 and 19-year-old seasons. He's 20.

Contracts don't work remotely the same in the NHL as they do in MLB. There is no real manipulation you can get when all players hit UFA at 27 regardless.

So either way he gets 2 years as an ELC - at least this way he gets a cup of coffee for a third.

    Makes sense.

Next year, Lundqvist, with Schneider and Robertson waiting in the wings. Damn.

I know they recently signed Hunter Skinner to an ELC not too long ago. He's another guy, perhaps more under the radar than the others, but one to keep an eye out for sure, I think.

Aaaaaand will sign Lundqvist in the off season.

Makes me hate Trouba even more- taking up a valuable roster spot.
