Nathan MacKinnon, Potential 1st Overall Pick, is Not the Next Sidney Crosby

    http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...of-talent.html

Another scout asked the media to practise caution when singing the praises of MacKinnon, the odds-on favourite to go first overall. “He should never be compared to Sidney Crosby (even though they both hail from the Cole Harbour region of Nova Scotia). One guy is a superstar, the other is a projected star. I’ve always felt the media is placing too high of expectations on Nathan.”

I doubt this will affect his drank rank much, if at all, but it does raise the question of whether or not the team that manages to draft him will have to temper their expectations a bit compared to the recent trend of teams tending to sign their high first round picks right out of the draft (Yakupov, Stamkos, Murray, RNH, Landeskog, Hall, Seguin, Tavares, etc).

Totally different player. Mackinnon is a bull. He's gotta be #2 behind Jones right now. Drouin could be special too.

Any team that misses the playoffs now has a chance at the #1 pick via the lottery.

I don't think we're gonna miss the Playoffs.

Jones is impressive, but I NEVER can justify taking a defenseman number 1 overall.

Top forwards coming out of Jr's are SO much easier to determine potential then defenseman.
Typically the number 1 forward is a franchise player....defenseman not so much.

    Top forwards taken
    2012- Yakupov
    2011- Nugent-Hopkens
    2010- Hall
    2009- Tavares
    2008- Stamkos
    2007- Kane
    2006- Staal
    2005- Crosby
    2004- Ovechkin
    2003- Staal
    2002- Nash
    2001- Kovalchuk
    2000- Heatley
    1999- Stefan
    1998- Lecavalier
    1997- Thornton

    Top defenseman taken
    2012- Murray
    2011- Larsson
    2010- Gudbranson
    2009- Hedman
    2008- Doughty
    2007- Hickey
    2006- Johnson
    2005- Johnson (Jack)
    2004- Barker
    2003- Suter
    2002- Bouwmeester
    2001- Komisarek
    2000- Klesla
    1999- Mezei
    1998- Stuart
    1997- Brewer

Some great defenseman, but that group of forwards for the most part are franchise players.

    That was so last week

I keed I keed, anything could happen, but the team took a step in the right direction finally.

P.S. where's McDonagh's name in that lot above?—OK I'm a big McD fan, but if he'd been higher rated and we'd used a #1 overall on him would anyone be complaining? Yeah, I guess, so, but I think we got a steal of a steal with that kid.
